UNI tennis: Cardoso, Dalecka reach singles finals at Bulldog Classic

DES MOINES, Iowa — Lorena Cardoso and Darta Dalecka both finished as runners-up in their respective singles flights as UNI tennis competed at Drake's Bulldog Classic over the weekend in its second of three fall competitions.
Cardoso opened the weekend with a first round win over Creighton's Allison Wilcox (6-3, 7-5) before advancing to the black flight finals after Hitakamya Narwal Singh (South Dakota) retired. South Dakota's Grace Chadick would command the championship match, defeating Cardoso, 6-0, 6-2. Cardoso now sits at 2-4 in singles.
Dalecka, entering the tournament with a 1-2 record in singles, defeated Jule Schulte of North Dakota (6-0, 6-4) and Sorcha Caves (0-6, 6-2 [11-9]) to reach the white flight championship. She would fall to Drake's Oriana Parkins Goodwin (6-4, 6-7 [10-3]) after a third-set tiebreak/
After dropping her first singles match of the season to Creighton's Malika Shukla (6-4, 6-1), Andrijana Brkic bounced back and picked up wins over Nyah Kauders (North Dakota) by walkover and Omaha's Zoe Adkins (4-6, 6-3 [10-5]) in the blue flight bracket. Kim Zizek, competing in the grey flight, would drop all three of her matches in singles play, falling to Sapir Sela of North Dakota (6-2, 6-2), Annika Elvestrom of Creighton (6-0, 6-3) and Lillian Tiemeyer of Omaha (6-3, 6-1).
Lasya Mylavarapu would fall to North Dakota's Aziza Aubin (6-4, 6-2) before retiring from the tournament against Creighton's Jeanne Marie (6-3, 2-2). Issa Sullivan meanwhile came up short against Keegan VanPelt of Omaha (7-6, 6-1) before also retiring, as would Kanyanut Sudsaard, who fell to Chadick of South Dakota (6-1, 6-0) in the black flight singles bracket.
In doubles, after a first round loss to Creighton's Ana Paula Martinez and Annika Elvestrom (8-5), Brkic and Zizek were able to grab a pair of wins over North Dakota's Charlotte Bowles and Aziza Aubin (8-2), as well as Omaha's Zoe Adkins and Addison Miller (8-4) in the white doubles flight.
UP NEXT
The Panthers head to Springfield, Missouri for the MVC Individual Championships from October 6-8. The tournament will take place at the Cooper Tennis Complex with the start time to be determined.
