AMES, Iowa — Kicking off the first meet of the 2023 season, the UNI men's and women's cross country teams took to the ISU Cross Country Course on Friday morning in a condensed field against Iowa State and Drake.

Junior Emma Hoins anchored the Panthers in the women's 5K race finishing with a time of 17:30, the fourth-best mark in program history with a 15th place finish. Kate Crawford also cracked UNI's top-ten list in the 5K in 18th place with a time of 17:40, tying with Ashley Norem for the tenth-best time in school history. Ella Popenhagen (17:50) and Eden Mueller (17:52) crossed the finish line in 21st and 22nd place respectively, while junior Sophia Jungling finished shortly after in a time of 18:04 in 23rd.

On the men's side, Chase Lauman placed seventh in his collegiate debut in the 6K race with a time of 18:31 to lead the Panther pack. Caleb Shumaker recorded a time of 18:39 to come in 11th place, while junior Tyler Colvin crossed the finish line in a time of 19:05 in 15th. Brady Griebel (19:22) and Carson Owens (19:24) posted 19th and 20th place finishes for UNI respectively.

UP NEXT

UNI returns to the course on Sept. 15 at the Redbird Invite in Normal, Illinois, hosted by Illinois State University. The Panther women will begin competition at 5 p.m. CT with the 6K race, followed by the men's 8K at 5:45 p.m. CT.
