CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- All roads lead to Texas as three Panther athletes are set to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning Wednesday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Isaiah Trousil, Makenna Wilson and Mari Shavers will all take to the stage searching for All-American status in the college track and field season's biggest meet. Top-eight finishers will receive First Team All-American status, while ninth through 16th place finishes can earn Second Team All-American recognition.
Trousil is set to compete in the national semifinals for both the 100 and 200-meter dashes on Wednesday, looking to make one last mark in the final meet of his collegiate career. Having earned NCAA Indoor All-American recognition in 2022 in the 200 meters, Trousil will seek his first outdoor All-American finish and attempt to extend UNI's streak to seven consecutive seasons with an NCAA All-American athlete.
This year's Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) outdoor champion in both events, Trousil, the first Panther to reach the NCAA Championships in the 100 meters since Brandon Carnes in 2017, holds the second-fastest time in the 100 meters in program history at 10.07 seconds and enters this week's competition tied for the 13th fastest mark in the field. In addition to winning the conference crown in the 100-meter dash, Trousil also claimed first place in the event at both the Texas and Drake Relays. He qualified for the NCAA Championships by virtue of a seventh place finish at the NCAA Regionals in Sacramento, California.
In the 200 meters, Trousil enters with the third-fastest time in school history at 20.59 seconds, and will be seeded tenth in the NCAA semifinal heats. Finishing fourth at the NCAA Regionals, he has also won the event twice this season, coming at the Fighting Illini Challenge and MVC Championships.Â
Trousil is slated to run in the semifinal heat of both the 100-meter dash at 7:46 p.m. CST, followed by the 200 meters at 8:44 p.m. CST on Wednesday night. Potential finals will be run on Friday (see full UNI competition schedule below).
In the throwing cage, Makenna Wilson and Mari Shavers have made history before the start of this year's national championships, becoming not only the first Panther women to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Paige Knodle in 2016, but the first UNI qualifiers in the women's hammer throw. Knodle is also the last Panther women's athlete to earn All-American honors back in 2016 in the heptathlon.
Wilson, the reigning MVC champion and school record holder, notched a career-best toss of 66.69 meters at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic earlier this season. Seeded 11th heading to Texas, Wilson qualified for the finals site in Austin after taking sixth place at the regional meet in Sacramento with a best throw of 66.47 meters.
Shavers, who finished just behind Wilson in the hammer throw at the MVC Championships, placed seventh in Sacramento to reach her first NCAA Championship meet after a 65.58-meter toss in her final attempt at regionals, marking the second-best throw in school history. The Waterloo, Iowa native is seeded 13th in the 24-person field in Austin.
Both Wilson and Shavers will compete beginning at 3:30pm CST on Thursday afternoon.
