CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --– Following an early week change in schedule, UNI track and field will stay in the region this Friday as the Panthers compete at Augustana College's Meet of Champions at the Austin E. Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex in Rock Island, Illinois. UNI's originally scheduled meet at Iowa on Saturday was canceled earlier this week due to impending weather.
The Panthers return to action after an active weekend of career-best and top-performances at four meets across the midwest and west coast last week. UNI claimed 5 first place finishes at Drake's Jim Duncan Invite in Des Moines last Friday including a pair of field victories in the field with Brendan Safley in the men's pole vault (5.06 meters) and Rylie Todd in the women's high jump (1.67 meters). Emily Vos secured her first victory in two years in the 200-meter dash with a final time of 24.59 seconds, while distance runner Emma Hoins clinched the women's 5,000-meter title in 17:48.19. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Clare Basala, Liv Freund, Tyler Gray and Amelia Hill also took first place (3:50.21).
Competing at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Jack Sumners ran a career-best time of 14.18 second to win the men's 110-meter hurdles, while the Panther men's 4x100-meter relay team of Tinashe Chigudu, Luke Meyers, Isaiah Trousil and Deonte Dean placed first in a time of 40.65 seconds.
Down in Oklahoma, Mari Shavers finished in second place with a personal-best toss of 59.30 meters in the women's hammer throw at the Sooner Invite, breaking her previous best toss by 0.32 meters to improve her No. 5 ranking all-time in UNI history. Katie Fare competed in the women's shot put placing fourth with a throw of 16.32 meters. Makenna Wilson and Fare both marked career-bests in the women's discus throw to close the Sooner Invite, with Wilson finishing in seventh place with her personal-best throw of 47.75 meters, and Fare came in 10th place with her best toss of 44.79 meters.
Out in California, Carter Morton notched a career-best total score in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, surpassing the 7,000-point mark for the first time in his career with 7,210 points. He also notched career-best marks in the 100-meter dash, as well as the discus and javelin, while leading his respective group with a 2.01-meter leap in the high jump. Distance runner Drake Hanson also competed under the lights in California, finishing in 52nd place in the crowded 800-meter field with a time of 1:50.20, and notching a career-best time in the mile at 3:53.24.
