CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI swimmers Olivia Chambers and Cali Prochaska will head south to the warm temperatures of central Florida this weekend for the 2023 U.S. Paralympic Swimming National Championships in Orlando beginning on Friday at the Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Both Chambers and Prochaska enter this weekend's competition with multiple para swimming national titles under their belts. Prochaska is a seven-time U.S. Paralympic Swimming national championship medalist, including four titles, while Chambers earned her first gold medals at the event last year in Charlotte, North Carolina, while also being named the Swimmer of the Meet.
Chambers and Prochaska are slated to compete in three events together in their respective classification groups, including the 400-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke and 1,500-meter freestyle. Prochaska will also swim the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter freestyle, while Chambers will include the 200-meter individual medley in her schedule.
Chambers, a junior from Little Rock, Arkansas who is legally blind, won four silver and two bronze medals in her last major para swimming competition this summer at the Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester, England. A U.S. Paralympic Team hopeful for the 2024 games in Paris, Chambers currently holds five American Para Swimming records, including the long-course meters record for S13 swimmers in the 400-meter individual medley, as well as the S13 yards records for the 1,000-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley.
Prochaska, a sophomore hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana with proximal femoral focal disorder in her left leg and hip, won four medals at the 2023 Parapan American Games last month in Santiago, Chile, including gold in the SM9 200-meter individual medley and S9 100-meter butterfly. She also took silver in the S9 400-meter freestyle and bronze in the SB8 100-meter backstroke.
