Panther track & field: Santi sets school record at Larry Wieczorek Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa --- Rylan Santi made program history over the weekend while multiple Panther track and field athletes set season and career-bests on Friday and Saturday at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational at the Iowa Indoor Track Building.
Katie Fare kicked off competition for the Panthers on Friday with a 3rd place finish in the Hawkeye Pro women's shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 3.75 inches. Mari Shavers and Makenna Wilson both notched top-8 finishes in the women's weight with Shavers taking 4th place (60 feet, 7.75 inches) and Wilson finishing in 7th (59 feet, 11.25 inches). Wilson also finished 2nd in the women's shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 1.75 inches.
Emma Hoins recorded a season-best time in the women's 3000-meter run of 9:55.88 in 6th place on Friday afternoon, while Santi (25.16) and Andrew Ferguson (22.05) both finished in 5th place in their respective 200-meter dashes.
Santi kicked off competition on Saturday afternoon by breaking the UNI school record in the women's 60-meter dash with a preliminary time of 7.49 seconds, narrowly edging out Melissa Campbell's record from 2000 by 0.01 second. Santi would go on to finish 3rd in the 60-meters with a finals time of 7.52.
Jack Sumners set a season-best in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds to finish in 4th place, as Drew Bartels finished in 7th (8.16). Erin Kerkhoff took 6th in the women's 400-meter dash (58.31) with Auriona Kimbrough taking 8th place with a time (58.51). In the men's 400-meters, Onal Mitchell led the Panthers with a career-best time of 48.56 in 4th place, as Feguson finished in 9th place with a season-best time, clocking in at 49.02.
In the mid-distance races, Sophia Jungling posted a career-best time in the 800-meters of 2:12.97 to take 7th place, while Drake Hanson, Chase Knoche and Micaiah Ellis all set new career-bests in the men's 800-meters. Hanson finished 2nd in the men's Hawkeye Pro 800-meters with a time of 1:51.33, as Knoche finished in 3rd premier race (1:54.40) with Ellis in 5th place (1:55.29).
UNI closed the meet out with a set of strong 4x400-meter relay finishes, led by a 2nd place finish in the men's relay by Feguson, Mitchell, Titus Jackson and Hanson with a time of 3:16.75. The women's relay team of Kimbrough, Jill Bennett, Jungling and Kerkhoff finished in 5th place (3:56.43).
