UNI softball sets program conference win record against Bradley
5/7/2022 6:18:00 PM | Softball
PEORIA, Ill. -- With doubleheader wins against the Bradley Braves Saturday afternoon, UNI softball set a program record for conference wins.
Big offensive innings in the middle of the game were the difference for the Panthers in both wins on Saturday against Bradley. UNI had a three-run fourth inning in Game 1 and a four-run fifth inning in Game 2 to take two dominant leads against the Braves with a 7-1 win and an 8-1 win. Along with strong offensive games, the Panthers set a program record for most conference wins at 22 with their second win of the day.
Game 1 | W, 7-1
UNI jumped out to an early lead in their first game of the day as designated player Mya Dodge made it home on a double down the right-field line by center fielder Madison Parks. It would be the Panthers only run in the first as Bradley answered back with their own run on a double down the left-field line in the next half-inning.
The game would remain tied through the next two innings as starting pitcher Kailyn Packard threw four strikeouts facing eight batters. Northern Iowa would regain their lead in the top of the fourth inning starting with a solo home run by catcher Emmy Wells to left field. Energized by Wells' homer, three of the next four Panther batters would reach base on a hit or walk.
Third baseman Brooke Snider would be the next runner to score for UNI as she found her way home on a DarynLamprecht RBI single. Freshman MakennaKuper would come in to pinch run for Lamprecht and score on the next at-bat as Dodge put a long double in right field.
The Panthers would tack on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning through the middle of the order. Parks led off with a double to center field and was brought home by a Kylee Sanders single to left. Second baseman Taylor Hogan would also double in the fifth, bringing Sanders in for run number six. UNI's final run would come in the top of the seventh as Sanders hit another RBI single for Parks to score.
Packard pitched her 19th complete game of the year against the Braves on Saturday. Through her seven innings in the circle, Packard allowed four hits and one run with 11 strikeouts and just one walk. Three Panther batters had two hits in the first game of the day, (Dodge, Parks, Sanders) while three batters had a hit each (Wells, Hogan, Lamprecht). Sanders was the only player in the lineup with multiple RBIs at two while Wells led the way in putouts with 10.
Game 2 | W, 8-1
The Panthers would get a walk to start the second game of the day and continued to put runners on base throughout the contest. While no UNI runner found their way home in the first, it didn't take long for the Panthers to start scoring. In the top of the second, Hogan hit a long single to left-center, sending pinch-runner Maggie Erpelding home for the first run of the game.
But Northern Iowa wouldn't stop there as two batters later Lamprecht made an almost identical hit to left for Hogan to score the second run. The Panthers would add four more hits in the third thanks to a three-run homer from Wells. But the first run of the third was scored by right fielder Sammy Moss after Sanders reached first on a fielder's choice.
Bradley would score their only run of the game after UNIs firestorm of a third inning. Braves first baseman Katie Pederson hit a solo shot to right-center to end the potential shutout for starting pitcher Samantha Heyer. It would be a quiet fourth inning before the Panthers returned to their red-hot offense.
In the top of the fifth, Northern Iowa loaded up the bases on a walk, a single, and an intentional walk of Wells. With the bases full, Hogan slapped a fielder's choice to second base where the Braves were able to make the throw home to avoid a run. But with the bases still loaded a ground out from pinch hitter Hannah Isley would score Sanders for a second time, making it a 7-1 game.
The Panthers added a final insurance run in the top of the seventh inning in another bases-loaded situation. With three on, Snider hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Sanders to score her third run of the game and fourth of the day. UNIs defense closed out the game in the bottom of the inning with a flyout, a line out, and a strikeout looking from Heyer.
In her fifth complete game of the season, Heyer allowed the one home run and five hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts. No Panther batter had more than one hit in the game but five separate players had a hit against the Braves. Sanders would be the only player to score multiple times with three runs while Wells had three RBIs from her home run in the third inning.
