UNI golf coach John Bermel awarded contract extension through 2024 season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI Director of Athletics David Harris has announced the contract extension of UNI men's and women's golf coach John Bermel.
"We are really excited to have John Bermel leading our Panther men and women," said UNI's Director of Athletics David Harris. "His commitment to student-athletes and the university is seen through his development of his players. John's investment of his time, energy and passion into our golf programs make him the right person to continue leading us into the future."
The two-year contract extension runs through the end of the 2024 season. Bermel has coached the UNI men's golf team since 1995 as well as the women's program since 2002.
The UNI men have seen a pair of top-10 individual finishes at the MVC Championships in the last two seasons under Bermel, as Griffin Parker tied for eighth place at the 2022 MVC Championships in Paducah, Kentucky.
On the women's side, the program saw history as Hannah Bermel became the first female golfer in program history to earn four First Team All-MVC honors. She also is the first female golfer in UNI history to take home MVC Scholar-Athlete recognition in four consecutive seasons. She tied for 12th place at this year's MVC Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
"We are ready to move on to next year, because we have so many strong returners," said Bermel. "Attracting students to the university is so exciting, because this is a great institution. It's a great size, and it's the right place for a lot of students. I appreciate the support I get here."
The Panther golf programs have seen success in the classroom, with the women's team posting a 3.69 fall team GPA, while the men's a team had a fall GPA of 3.17 Under Bermel, 21 golfers have earned 32 First Team All-MVC honors, and Bermel has earned MVC Coach of the Year honors twice: 2001 on the men's side and 2021 on the women's.
Bermel is a 2014 inductee to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame and serves as the head golf professional at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls, a role he has held since 1995.
