UNI track and field: King resets own record, advances to 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships

UNI track and field at 2022 West Preliminary Rounds
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Darius King reset his own shot put record to become the first Panther of UNI track and field to advance to the 2022 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
King was seventh at last year's outdoor championships. He finished 10th at the 2022 Indoor NCAA Championships and was 12th at the 2021 indoor NCAA Championships.
In his opening throw of the day, King threw 20.33 meters (66 feet, 8.5 inches), breaking his own outdoor record of 20.26 meters (66-5.75). His new record is just 2.25 inches off the Missouri Valley Conference all-time best set by Jared Kern of Southern Illinois in 2018.
King finished second overall, advancing to the NCAA Championships set for June 8-11. He will compete again in discus with teammate Tom Yezek at 1 p.m. CT Friday.
Isaiah Trousil cruised in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.30 seconds. He took second in his heat to earn an automatic bid to the quarterfinals and will compete again at 6:35 p.m. Friday. He is sitting in 10th overall heading into the final round at the West Prelims.
Parker Kiewiet improved his 200-meter dash time to advance to the quarterfinals. He still has the second best time in program history. With a time of 20.58 seconds, he is 12th heading into the final round at the West Prelims. He will compete again at 7:50 p.m. Friday.
Kiewiet also competed in the long jump earlier in the day. He jumped 7.54 meters (24-9) to take 21st overall.
Jack Sumners finished 31st in the first rounds of the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.09 seconds (+2.1 wind). The mark is just off his personal bests: 14.06 (+2.5 wind) and wind-legal (1.8) 14.38.
Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites qualify for the NCAA Championships held June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Katie Fare and Marin Ehler will compete in shot put. Fare is second on the all-time list with throw of 16.14 meters (52-11.5) Ehler's third-place finish at the MVC Championships in the shot put moved her up UNI's all-time list to No. 6. The duo sits No. 30 and 49 in the region.
Mari Shavers' hammer throw of 58.98 meters (193-6) is the fourth best throw at UNI and No. 46 at the West Prelims.
