UNI track and field: Morton leads decathlon after first day at MVC Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - UNI track and field's Carter Morton leads the decathlon field after the first day's events at the MVC Championships.
Both the men's and women's teams are sitting in fifth place, but are positioned to tally points with the completion of the multis and the finals of preliminary events held today.
Morton has a 40-point lead over Ariel Atias of Illinois, and three more Panthers finished in the top six after the first day:
Teddy Allen scored points for the men's team with a fifth-place finish in pole vault with a jump of 4.45 meters (14-7.25). In the throws, Darius King took seventh in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 57.03 meters (187-1).
On the women's side, Isabelle Schaffer and Jill Vonnahme took fifth and sixth in the 10,000-meter run in times of 37 minutes, 38.05 seconds and 37:38.43. The Panthers also earned sixth place finishes from Isabelle Holtzen in pole vault (3.60 meters / 11-9.75) and Mari Shavers in hammer throw (55.68 meters / 182-8). Marin Ehler also finished in the top eight with a hammer throw of 55.28 meters (181-4) to take seventh place.
The women have three Panthers sitting in the top eight of the heptathlon, which will wrap up tomorrow. Kelly Proesch is in fourth with 2,700 points, Lydia Berns-Schweingruber is in sixth with 2,613 points and Sydney Durbin is in seventh with 2,562 points. E. Grace Quinlan of Indiana State leads the field with 2,808 points.
Parker Kiewiet posted the fastest time in the field with a time 20.73 seconds. Isaiah Trousil also qualified and will be seeded third with a time of 21.30. Tayshaun Cooper is sitting in seventh with a qualifying time of 21.54.
On the women's side, Emily Vos (24.47), Paishence Johnson (24.70) and Libby Wedewer (24.74) are seeded third, fourth and seventh, respectively.
The finals for the 200-meter dashes are set for 2:55 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday.
In the 1,500-meter run, both the men and women will have one competing in the finals set for 1:10 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Sunday. Craig Becker has the fifth fastest qualifying time on the men's side with a time of 3:57.60, and Paige Holub is seeded 11th with a time of 4:34.91.
