NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UNI softball team ended a five-game losing skid on Wednesday afternoon with a tight 4-3 win over the Lipscomb Bison.
After another rainout over the weekend to end the Niner Invitational, the Panthers were itching to get back on the field in Tennessee. It was a close game for UNI but the Panthers were able to defend their lead through the final two innings for the 4-3 win. UNI would tie their season-high in hits with seven against Lipscomb.
The Panthers would get on the board early as lead-off batter Mya Dodge hit a double to center-left field to get on base. Sammy Moss would follow up the double with a single to right field, putting Dodge in scoring position. A single from Madison Parks in the next bat would send Dodge home to put UNI up by one with no outs in the first. The next three Panther batters would be retired in order going into the bottom of the first.
Lipscomb would answer back with some runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. A home run from the Bison's third batter in the lineup would bring both herself and leadoff hitter Amy Vitula home for a 2-1 lead. Lipscomb's next two batters would fly and line out to bring UNI up to bat.
Leadoff hitter Kylee Sanders would get a single to start the fourth inning. Brooke Snider would come up next and leave the bag empty, striking out on a full count. But first baseman Daryn Lamprecht would follow up with a double to center-right field to put Sanders in scoring position.
Second baseman Taylor Hogan would get the ball into play on her second pitch faced to bring both Sanders and Lamprecht home thanks to an error by the Bison at first. But Hogan would be thrown out at second after the runs scored to end the half-inning for the Panthers, now back in the lead by one.
The bottom of the fourth began with a walk and a hit by pitch for Lipscomb as pitcher Samantha Heyer stepped in to relieve starter Kailyn Packard after three innings at the circle. A strikeout and a foul out to catcher Emmy Wells would put Vetula back up to bat for the Bison. After four pitches, Vetula hit an RBI double to tie the game up. Heyer would retire the next batter looking to end the inning with the two teams tied 3-3-.
The Panthers would break the tie right away in the top of the fifth as Dodge hit a leadoff home run for her second home run of the young season. Dodge would have the last hit of the game for UNI as Lipscomb would walk both Moss and Parks before getting outs on Wells and left fielder Kamryn Shaffer. The Bison would make it close in the bottom of the sixth, loading up the bases on only two outs. But a diving catch from Parks for the third out would end the inning to get the Panthers out unscathed.
It'd be a three-up and three-down top of the seventh but UNI would defend their lead in the final frame. Lipscomb's first two batters would field out while Heyer grabbed the final strikeout of the game to give the Panthers the 4-3 win.
Dodge was the key player on offense for UNI in Wednesday's win as she had two runs, two hits, and one RBI in three at-bats. Dodge would only have one at-bat where she wouldn't make it to base, a strikeout in the top of the seventh. Lamprecht also had two hits on the day while Moss, Parks, and Kylee Sanders had one each. Dodge and Lamprecht would also record the only two RBIs of the day for the Panthers.
Relief pitcher Samantha Heyer was credited with the win for UNI as she pitched four innings, only allowing one run, one hit, and one error. Heyer made seven strikeouts in 18 batters faced and had an ERA of just 1.42. Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard would pitch three innings for two runs, two hits, two errors, and making five strikeouts.
