CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- UNI softball added another win to their resume on Friday in two games at the Governors Classic tournament hosted by Austin Peay State University.Â
The Panthers kicked off the Governors Classic in the first game of the day with a bang. UNI began their weekend with a shutout win of the Bellarmine Knights on Friday morning and ended the day in the afternoon with a walk-off loss to the host team, Austin Peay.Â
UNI vs. Bellarmine | W, 3-0
It was a quick start for the Panthers on Friday morning as lead-off batter Mya Dodge scored the first run of the day off a sacrifice fly ball from Madison Parks. UNI would continue to add to its lead in the third and fourth innings. In the third inning, the Panthers would get a leadoff home run from Dodge to left-center field. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sammy Moss hit an RBI single to bring in pinch-runner Hannah Isley. Isley landed on base as a pinch-runner for Ellie Owen who hit a single to center field in the second at-bat of the inning.Â
Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard had a complete shutout game in the circle for UNI. Throughout seven innings, Packard only allowed a single hit while making six strikeouts in 21 at-bats. The Panthers as a team had three runs, seven hits, and three RBIs to pick up their first shutout of the year.Â
UNI vs. Austin Peay | L, 2-3
In their afternoon game, UNI also grabbed the lead early on as Dodge hit a leadoff home run to center field. On defense for the Panthers, senior Erica Olerrecieved her first starting nod in the circle. Through two innings of work, Oler faced nine batters, gave up three hits, and had 25 pitches. Samantha Heyer came to the circle in the third inning in relief of Oler where it would be fairly quiet until the fifth inning. In the fifth UNI extended their lead to two as Moss grabbed a second RBI single to bring in pinch-runner Maggie Erpelding.
Both teams would only make it through four batters in the sixth as the Panthers tried to add onto their lead in the seventh. Brooke Snider would walk to open the final frame as Hannah Isley returned to pinch run. Hannah Kelley would send Isley to second with a sacrifice bunt. But the next two UNI batters would hit pop-ups to end the top of the seventh. Austin Peay would get a walk to start the bottom of the seventh followed by a single to left field to have runners at first and second.Â
Heyer would follow up with her final strikeout of the game at the top of the order. But the next Governors's batter would reach first on a fielder's choice, putting a runner on third and first. Austin Peay's offensive leader Lexi Osowski hit the final ball of the game, sending a three-run homer out to left-center to walk off the game. The Panthers would end the game with two runs, four hits, and two RBIs. Heyer would pick up the loss in relief as she pitched 4.2 innings for three hits and seven strikeouts.

UNI will play their second day of the Governors Classic at Cathi Maynard Park in Clarksville, Tennessee. The Panthers will start with a rematch against the Governors at 3:30 p.m. followed by a second game with the Bellarmine Nights at 6 p.m.Â
