CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Panther diver, Taylor Hogan, qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones with a new personal best of 286.35 on 3-meter against Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday afternoon.
Stepping onto the board for her final dive, the Panther junior needed just 44.05 points to secure her goal of qualifying for the Zones competition in Madison, Wisconsin in March. With a Back 1 ½ with 2 ½ Twists to close the round, she scored a 50.40, matching her season high for that dive and soaring past the qualifying standard of 280.Â
"It is so exciting to see her hard work pay off by accomplishing a goal that we have been working toward since her freshman year," Diving Coach Bethany Hovland said. "Taylor competes a challenging diving list, so she knew that throwing a consistent and clean list would achieve the qualifying score."
Hogan finished first against the field of eight divers competing on 3-meter Saturday. Her lineup features four dives with a degree of difficulty over 2.7, including a Back 2 ½ in Pike position rating at 3.0, for which she scored a 47.25.
Already ranking second among the all-time top performers in team history, Hogan improved her score to within 0.60 of the school record, held by diving coach Bethany Hovland. Her previous best score of 282.45, recorded last season against Iowa State, met the qualifying standard. However, with operational changes due to COVID-19, she wasn't able to attend.Â
"After narrowly missing the score in the past two competitions, she was determined to make the necessary corrections in practice," Hovland said. "She executed the plan and performed beautifully under pressure."Â
A successful two-sport student-athlete, Hogan has led the Panther divers throughout the season. In a previous meeting with Nebraska-Omaha, Hogan swept both boards, scoring a 275.93 on 3-meter that day. Heading towards the MVC Championships, she ranks second on 3-meter and fourth on 1-meter.
Five Diving Zone meets are held nationally to determine the divers that advance to the NCAA Championships. Diving Zone D includes many institutions from the midwest, stretching as far south as Texas.Â
The NCAA Diving Zone D meet will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on March 7-9 in the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
