VERMILLION, South Dakota - It was another defensive battle for the Panthers (2-5-1) who ultimately fell to the South Dakota Coyotes (4-1-2) on Sunday afternoon 0-1.Â
In a Senior Day rematch, the UNI women's soccer team traveled to South Dakota University to take on the Coyotes for the second game of their season series. It was the Coyotes Senior Day game, where USD was able to take another 0-1 win from the Panthers with a second half goal.
Similar to the team's first matchup of the season last week, UNI had a strong first half taking 5 shots and keeping the Coyotes limited to just 2 shots. The Panthers were also able to keep USD from the corners, not allowing a single corner kick in the first half against a team used to racking up corner kicks.Â
But the Coyotes were able to find their offense at the beginning of the second half with a goal from defender Jordan Centineo off a corner kick from forward Maddison Sullivan. The corner kick assist was the first corner kick of the game for USD. The Coyotes would take 3 more shots in the second half, all within the next 10 minutes of play.Â
The Panthers were able to spend most of the last 10 minutes of play within the offensive zone, recording 5 more shots in the second half. Three of those 5 shots were on goal from Ashley Harrington, Allison Whitaker, and Maddie Eastus. But the flurry of shots towards the end of the game wasn't enough for UNI to get one behind Coyotes goalkeeper Emma Harkleroad.
Leading the way offensively for the Panthers was forward Ashley Harrington with 2 shots and 1 on goal in 54 minutes played. Lauren Heinsch, Johnnie Hill, and Maddie Eastus also had a multiple shot game with 2 shots a piece. Defender Sandra Thiman recorded her first shot of the season Sunday afternoon in the 85th minute.
Goalkeeper Brittney Bentheimer played all 90 minutes for the Panthers in goal, making 1 save and allowing 1 goal. It was Bentheimer's second game of the season and the first starting in goal after playing 52 minutes against Western Illinois.Â
As a team UNI outshot the Coyotes 10 to 6 and led in shots on goal with 3 SOGs. The Panthers also led in corner kicks, taking 4 tries from the corner compared to USD's 3 corner kicks.Â
UP NEXT:
The Panthers return home to start Missouri Valley Conference play against the Evansville Aces on Friday, September 17th. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the UNI Soccer Field in Cedar Falls.Â
