Panthers fall in Carbondale after conceding two goals in final 46 minutes. UNI closes regular season Thursday against Drake.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The UNI soccer team held the league-leading Southern Illinois Salukis scoreless for the majority of the first half, but could not hold off SIU in the final 46 minutes in a 2-0 loss on Sunday in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play.
The Panthers were outshot by the Salukis offense by a 12-5 margin, including 5-1 in shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first half, neither team registered a shot until the 15th minute mark, when Ella Ubben's try was off target. Southern Illinois would find momentum on offense near the 20th minute, recording two shot attempts, but failed to find the back of the net. The Salukis earned four corner kicks in the first half but UNI's defense stood tall. Keira Bogott tried to break the scoreless tie in the 42nd minute with a shot attempt, but couldn't convert. In the 44th minute, SIU's Dana Nadda scored the game's first goal on a right-footed try to give the Salukis a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Panthers nearly tied the match in the 52nd minute as Shaelee Franck's shot attempt hit off the left goal post. Franck would record another shot attempt in the 57th minute but missed wide of the net.
SIU's Maya Dixon tried to extend the Salukis lead to two in minute 57 but Hailey Luedtke recorded the save to keep the game within one point. Kylie Knief attempted an equalizer in the 76th minute, putting a shot on net but was denied by SIU goalkeeper Reagan Miller. The Salukis would put the game away in the 78th minute with Aylie Haycock converting on a try to give Southern Illinois the 2-0 victory.
Franck led UNI in shot attempts with two on the day, followed by Ubben, Knief and Bogott with one each. Knief had the lone shot on goal for the Panthers attack. Panther goalkeeper Hailey Luedtke recorded three saves in the contest with two goals allowed.
