Panthers Shutout by Evansville in First MVC Match of the Season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The first conference game of the season ended in a loss for the UNI women's soccer team on Friday afternoon.
The Panthers and the Evansville Aces played their first MVC game on Friday afternoon at the UNI Soccer Field. Despite outshooting Evansville 18 to 9, the Aces were able to get the only 2 goals of the game in the second half to shutout the Panthers for UNI's fourth straight loss.Â
The Panthers had a hot start in the first half, putting up 4 shots on goal within the first 20 minutes of the game. The two teams would head into the second half knotted up at 0 with the Panthers edging out the Aces in shots, corner kicks, and fouls. But the Aces would find their offense in the second half with midfielder Abby Phelps scoring in both the 49th and the 60th minute for Evansville.Â
Phelps' first goal of the game came off a penalty kick after Panthers defender Allison Whitaker was called for a foul. Phelps was able to beat starting goalkeeper Caitlin Richards on the left side. The Aces second goal from Phelps came off a corner kick in the 60th minute.Â
The Panthers would get three good looks before the end of the game, two of which were saved up top by Evansville goalkeeper Michaela Till and one going high right. But the drive to the net in the last five minutes wouldn't be enough for UNI to get a goal behind Till.
For the match, the Panthers had 18 shots with 10 shots landing on goal, 6 corner kicks, and 6 fouls. Offensively three players had 4 shots in the game including Lauren Heinsch, Ashley Harrington, and Johnnie Hill. Harrington had all 4 of her shots end up on goal throughout the game. Also adding shots for UNI Maddie Celarek, Maddie Eastus, and Megan Benmore. Goalkeeper Caitlin Richards played 70 minutes for the Panthers, making 4 saves and allowing two goals. Chloe Russo subbed in to finish the last 20 minutes of the game in goal.
