
Panther Women's Soccer Falls to South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, South Dakota - The Panthers faced their toughest match yet against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Friday evening.
UNI Women's Soccer was able to get on the board first but ultimately fell to the Jackrabbits 4-1. The Panthers were held to their second lowest shots on goal total by South Dakota State's defensive presence and speed, only recording 2 SOG. UNI spent much of their time in the defensive zone throughout the game.Â
Panther forward Sophia Meyers recorded the lone goal for UNI in the 24th minute of the game. It was Meyers first goal of the season and was assisted by Lauren Heinsch. Just under 10 minutes later, Jackrabbits midfielder Avery Murdzek scored SDSU's first goal in the 33rd minute. Before the end of the first half the Jackrabbits doubled their lead with a goal from Karlee Manding, after a SDSU corner kick from the left side of the net.Â
The Jackrabbits continued their strong play in the offensive zone in the second half with a goal from forward Laney Murdzek in the 64th minute. Murdzek was able to get a deflection off a free kick taken by Karlee Manding to put the ball in the bottom left of the goal past Panthers goalkeeper Caitlin Richards. SDSU's final goal of the evening came at the 83 minute mark from Karlee Manding as she went in one on one against Richards.Â
It was a quiet game offensively on Friday evening for UNI. The Panthers took only 7 shots throughout 90 minutes, well below their average of 15.8 shots. UNI also had a low game in corner kicks, with only 2 taken against the Jackrabbits. Heinsch and Lizzie Mewes were the only Panthers to record multiple shots in the game with Heinsch and Meyers having the only two shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Caitlin Richards faced a total of 10 shots through 90 minutes on Friday night with 4 goals allowed. The Panthers also got their second yellow card of the season. The card was pulled against Siri Ott in the 85th minute of the game for unsporting conduct.Â
