Panthers Fall in Overtime to Western Illinois

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Sunday afternoon the UNI Panthers played Western Illinois in their 19th overall meeting, with the Leathernecks getting the win 4-3.
It took a little over ten minutes for the first goal of the game to be scored. The first goal came from Western Illinois defender Bridget Schuler, who was assisted by forward Jenna Lundren. The Panthers were able to tie it up 7 minutes later with a goal from Johnnie Hill at the 17-minute mark. The tie was broken in the 34th minute of the 1st half by the Panthers with an unassisted goal from Ashley Harrington.
The Leathernecks tied the game back up in the 2nd half as Schuler had an empty net chance after goalkeeper Brittney Bentheimer went for a save too early. The Leathernecks were then able to get their second lead of the game with a goal from forward Amy Andrews, assisted by Bridget Schuler. But the Panthers weren't going down without a fight as Lauren Heinsch tied the game to send it into overtime with only 5 minutes remaining. The Leathernecks were able to come back for the win as Maddie Hasken scored their 4th and final goal 6 minutes into overtime.
Lauren Heinsch led the Panthers in shots on goal as both of her shot attempts were on target with one goal. Three other players were able to put up two shots against Leathernecks goalkeeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez, who made 5 saves.
Starting goalkeeper Caitlin Richards finished the game with 2 saves on 3 shots allowed in 45 minutes of play. Brittney Bentheimer played the second half for the Panthers, having 3 saves on 5 shots.
Both teams were evenly matched in shots on goal as the Panthers had 8 SOG while the Leathernecks had 9. The Panthers led the game in corner kicks with 8 tries from the corner compared to 2 from the Leathernecks. The Panthers also got their first yellow card of the season near the end of the first half.
