Panthers Set for NCAA West Preliminary Round

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI track and field team is set to open competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in College Station, Tex., May 26-29. Live Results will be available and the meet will also be available to stream on Watch ESPN. Graduate students Kyler Yodts, Darius King and Thomas Yezek will kick off the action for the Panthers on Wednesday with the men's hammer throw and men's shot put.
The men's hammer throw is slated for 1:30 p.m. Yodts ranks 20th in the West Region after recording a personal best toss of 65.16m at the MVC Outdoor Championships on May 14. The Rock Island, Ill. native placed second in the event, earning all-conference honors.
The men's shot put, also scheduled for Wednesday, will kick off at 6 p.m. King, who was named the men's Most Outstanding Field Athlete after earning gold in the men's shot put (20.08m), and bronze in the men's javelin (56.53m, PR) and men's discus (52.72m) at the MVC Outdoor Championships, is ranked sixth in the West Region in the men's shot put category after posting a personal-best and school record of 20.14m on April 16 at the Gibson Invitational. Yezek earned the 37th seed with a toss of 18.04m, recorded on May 14 at the MVC Outdoor Championships.
On Thursday, senior Anna Hoyman is scheduled to compete in the women's hammer throw at 1:30 p.m. Hoyman posted a mark of 59.40m at the Drake Relays on April 22, which landed her as the 40th seed in the West Region.
On the track, graduate student Taylor Raines is set to compete in the first round of the women's 100 meters at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Raines will run in the second of six heats in the first round. The top three from each heat plus the next six best times will advance to Saturday's 7:05 p.m. quarterfinal, where the top three from each heat and the next three fastest times will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Raines ranked 42nd in the West Region after posting a time of 11.60 at the Illinois State Invite on April 30. The Woodbury, Minn. native also finished third in the women's 100 meters (11.84) and 200 meters (24.00, PR) to earn all-conference honors at the MVC Outdoor Championships.
Friday's action will see Yezek and sophomore Cameron Jones compete in the men's discus at 1:30 p.m. In the men's discus category, Yezek ranks 28th in the West Region with a personal best toss of 55.76m, recorded on May 14 at the MVC Outdoor Championships. The toss earned Yezek a gold medal and all-conference honors. Jones rounded out the list of competitors in the men's discus as the 48th seed with a personal best mark of 53.91m, recorded at the Illinois State Invite on May 1. The top 12 competitors in the men's and women's hammer throw, men's shot put, and men's discus will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Saturday, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of junior Rylan Santi, freshman Libby Wedewer, Raines, and freshman Paishence Johnson is slated to compete at 5:30 p.m. in the second of three heats. The Panthers earned the 21st seed with a time of 45.31 at the MVC Outdoor Championships on May 16, placing second overall and smashing the previous UNI record that had stood for 27 years. The top three finishing teams in each heat and the next three fastest times will advance to Eugene, Oregon.
