UNI Track & Field Gears Up for MVC Outdoor Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI track and field team is set to compete at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Carbondale, Ill., May 14-16. The Panther men are on the prowl for their third consecutive title as competition starts Friday with the men's decathlon at 10 a.m. Friday's action will continue with field events starting at noon and track events at 6 p.m. Saturday's multis will start at 10 a.m. with the continuation of the decathlon, field events will start at 3 p.m., and track events will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday's field events kick off at 11:30 a.m., while track events will start at 1 p.m.
The MVC announced that spectators will not be permitted at the MVC Outdoor Championships due to Jackson County COVID parameters. Live results will be available throughout the weekend. The MVC Outdoor Championships will be broadcasted on ESPN3, starting at 5:50 p.m. on Friday, 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:50 p.m. on Sunday. Coverage will also be available at those times via ESPN+, found on ESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app.

The Panthers closed out the regular season with the South Dakota Tune-Up in Vermillion, S.D. on May 7, tallying 22 top-five finishes on the day, including four event wins. Sophomore Thai Thompson stopped the clock with a personal best of 52.82 to place first in the men's 400-meter hurdles. In the women's 400 meters, junior Emily Vos garnered gold with a personal best time of 56.50. Freshman Parker Kiewiet notched first-place finishes in the men's 200 meters with a personal best time of 21.40 and men's long jump with an outdoor personal best leap of 7.24m. A Look Back at the 2019 MVC Outdoor Championships
Due to the COVID19 pandemic, the 2020 MVC Outdoor Championships were canceled. At the 2019 MVC Outdoor Championships, the Panther men captured their second consecutive title and ninth in program history with 183.25 points in Terre Haute, Ind., May 10-12. The UNI women posted 100.5 points to place fourth overall. The Purple and Gold tallied six individual titles and 22 All-Conference awards on the weekend. Maddie McCalla clinched gold in the women's 400 meters with a time of 54.39. On the men's side, Evan Long took home gold in the 400 meters with a time of 46.99 and Connor Ham posted a time of 14.06 to place first in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Cade Kirkpatrick landed first in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.38m, while Isaac Holtz posted a mark of 54.56m to place first in the men's discus. Austin Heitland defended his title in the men's decathlon, earning 6735 points.
Ranked in the NCAA
Graduate student Darius King is ranked seventh in the NCAA in the men's shot-put category after posting a personal-best and UNI school record of 20.14m (66' 1") at the Gibson Invitational on April 16.
MVC Standings
UNI leads the Missouri Valley in three events. Redshirt senior Aleenah Marcucci leads in the women's 100-meter hurdles category with a time of 13.60, posted on April 30. With his personal best and school record of 20.14m set on April 16, King leads the men's shot put category. After posting 6238 points on April 15, sophomore Zack Butcher leads in the men's decathlon category.
