King, Kiewiet, Vonnahme Lead Panthers at USD Early Bird

VERMILLION, SD – UNI track and field opened the outdoor season at the USD Early Bird Meet in Vermillion, SD, on Saturday, tallying 32 top-five finishes on the day, including event wins from graduate student Darius King in the men's shot put, freshman Parker Kiewiet in the men's long jump, and junior Jill Vonnahme in the women's 5000 meters.
Kiewiet posted a leap of 7.11m to place first in the men's long jump. In the men's shot put, King had a commanding performance, recording a throw of 19.06m to clinch first. Also in the men's shot put, graduate student Thomas Yezek placed second with a toss of 17.05m. Yezek notched another second-place finish in the discus (53.37m) with King finishing third (50.39m).
On the track, Vonnahme stopped the clock with a personal-best of 18:11.38 for a first-place finish in the women's 5000 meters. Senior Tayshaun Cooper and Kiewiet tied for second in the men's 200 meters, each posting a time of 21.82. In the women's 200 meters, graduate student Taylor Raines and junior Emily Vos led the Panthers, placing second (24.62) and third (24.90), respectively. Junior Paige Holub also earned silver, clocking a personal-best time of 4:31.94 in the women's 1500 meters. UNI garnered second-place finishes in the women's 4x100-meter relay and men's and women's 4x400-meter relays.
The Purple and Gold notched third-place finishes in the men's 110-meter hurdles (sophomore Jack Sumners, 14.58), men's 1500 meters (senior Seb Gearhart, 3:54.54), men's 400-meter hurdles (sophomore Thai Thompson, 53.55), women's shot put (junior Morgan Nealey, 14.39m), men's high jump (senior Cameron Cantrall, 2.01m), and men's hammer throw (graduate student Kyler Yodts, 62.66m)
