King Shatters UNI's Shot Put Record at Gibson Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – UNI graduate-student Darius King shattered UNI's outdoor shot put record at the close of the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday. Over the weekend, the Panthers notched event wins in the men's discus, men's hammer throw, and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and totaled 27 top-five finishes. Finishing second in the men's and women's team rankings, the men earned 128 points and the women posted 97.50 points. 
 
King posted a personal-best of 20.14m to break the UNI school record in the men's outdoor shot put, surpassing the previous record of 19.36m (63' 6.25"), recorded in 2016 by Justin Baker. King landed second with his toss and fellow graduate-student Tom Yezek took third with a toss of 17.54m. Yezek and King also took first and second in the men's discus with throws of 53.76m and 52.02m, respectively. Freshman Brendan Safley posted a mark of 4.60m to place second in the men's pole vault, while fellow freshman Aaron Sobush placed fourth with mark of 4.45m.
 
On the track, junior Paige Holub clinched first in the women's 3000m steeplechase, clocking a time of 11:04.94, while fellow junior Mia Rampton took fourth with a time of 11:28.94. Graduate-student Elijah Hicks and sophomore Jack Sumners notched personal-bests and second-place finishes for the Purple and Gold in the men's 100 meters (10.55) and men's 110-meter hurdles (14.15), respectively. Sophomore Jill Bennett placed third in the women's 400 meters, clocking a time of 55.43, with junior Emily Vos following to place fifth with a time of 56.94.
 
The Panthers garnered second-place finishes in the women's 4x100m relay with a time of 46.05 and the women's 4x400m relay with a time of 3:50.39. The men's 4x400m relay team placed third with a time of 3:17.60.
 
Friday's action saw graduate-student Kyler Yodts earn gold in the men's hammer throw, recording a new personal-best toss of 63.21. The Panthers also tallied second-place finishes in the women's hammer throw (senior Anna Hoyman, 58.44m), men's javelin (sophomore Thai Thompson, 48.00m), men's decathlon (sophomore Zack Butcher, 6238 points). Hicks and sophomore Cameron Jones garnered third-place finishes in the men's 200 meters and men's hammer throw, respectively.
