UNI Hosts MVC Indoor Championships This Weekend

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI track and field will host the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in the UNI-Dome this weekend. Competition will kick off on Friday with the men's session at 11:30 a.m. and the women's to follow at 5:00 p.m., both starting with the weight throw and long jump. On Saturday, the men's session will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the heptathlon and the women's session will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the pentathlon. There will be one session on Sunday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the continuation of the men's heptathlon. Live stats will be available throughout the weekend.
Tickets are available for purchase online at unitix.uni.edu and in person on the day of the event at the UNI-Dome. All-Session passes for all three days are available for $25 for adults and $15 for youths. Individual day passes are available for $10 for adults and $5 for youths. A transaction fee does apply for tickets purchased online.
The MVC Championships will also be broadcasted on ESPN3 throughout the weekend, starting at 4:45 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.
Last Time Out
UNI last competed at the Iowa State Classic, hosted by Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on Feb. 12-13. The Panthers tallied four event wins and 24 top-five finishes over the weekend. Graduate student Elijah Hicks, and seniors Sven Van Den Bergh, Tayshaun Cooper, and Cameron Cantrall garnered first-place finishes in the men's 60 meters (6.94), men's 600 yards (1:12.32), men's 200 meters (21.91), and men's high jump (1.90m), respectively. The Panthers notched second-place finishes in the men's 60-meter hurdles, men's shot put, and men's 4x400 meter relay.
On the women's side, sophomore Jill Bennett led the Panthers in the women's 60 meters, posting a personal best of 7.73 to place third. Junior Cierra Laux landed third in the women's pole vault with a mark of 3.30m and freshman Rylie Todd took home fourth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.65m.
A Look Back at Last Season's MVC Indoor Championships
The UNI men look to defend their championship title, having taken first with 143.5 points for the first time in 11 years at the 2020 MVC Indoor Championships. Isaiah Trousil and Darius King earned gold in the 200 meters and shot put, respectively. A total of 17 Panthers earned 23 All-Conference finishes with Tayshaun Cooper and Trousil leading the pack with three All-Conference finishes each in the 60 meters, 200 meters, and 4x400 meter relay. King and Cameron Bauer each earned two honors with King earning medals in the weight throw and shot put, and Bauer seeing the podium in the pole vault and triple jump.
The women's team placed fifth with 71.5 points, a mere 2.5 points shy of third place. Hannah Schau and Megan Hudson placed second and third in the 60-meter hurdles. Isabelle Holtzen and Allison Griffin notched third place finishes in the pole vault and shot put, respectively.
Ranked in the NCAA
Graduate student Darius King sits at seventh in the NCAA rankings in the men's shot put category with his personal-best and school record of 20.06m, recorded on Jan. 22 at the Jack Jennett Invitational.

At the close of the regular season for indoor competition, UNI leads the conference in six events: the men's 200m, men's 4x400 meter relay, men's and women's long jump, men's shot put, and men's heptathlon.
