Panther track and field indoor season opens with wins

AMES, Iowa - The UNI track and field teams posted eight winning marks when the men's and women's teams split between the Iowa State Holiday Invitational and the Jimmy Grant Invitational in Iowa City.

Sophomore Jill Bennett 7.70 won the 60-meter dash with a new personal best time of 7.70 seconds and was third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.12 seconds. Teammate Olivia Hubler was eighth in the 200-meter dash (26.06). Tyler Gray placed 7th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.99.
Four Panthers placed in the 800-meter run, going second, third, fourth and sixth. Freshman Sophia Jungling led the pack with a time of 2:17.35, sophomore Auriona Kimbrough finished fourth in 2:17.77. Junior Katie Nimrod (2:18.81) and freshman Liv Freund (2:26.94) took fourth and sixth, respectively.
In the high jump, sophomore Sydney Durbin and freshman Lydia Berns-Scheingruber jumped 5-feet, 1-inch to finish second and third.
Three Panthers placed in the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Paige Kisley was third in 8.99, and Lydia Berns-Schweingruber was fifth in 9.32. Junior Patrice Watson took sixth with a time of 9.67 seconds.
Three freshmen placed in the 400-meter dash Ainsley Schlicher was third (59.37). Millie Hill finished sixth (1:02.70), and Margo Chipps was seventh (1:04.61).
4x400 UNI took second and third Libby Wedewer, Auriona Kimbrough, Ainsley Schilcher, Katie Nimrod 3:57.10. Team B of Millie Hill, Olivia Huber, Margo Chipps, Liv Freun stopped the clock at 4:14.40.
On the men's side, freshman Kyle Trunnell won the men's 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.46 seconds. Teammate Hunter Manock, also a freshman, took third in 8.62.
The men swept long jump and high jump with a win from Jack Sumners, a sophomore, in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet (7.01 meters) and Ethan Peters, who won the high jump. Peters is a freshman and cleared 6-5.5 (1.97 meters). Caden Ungs, a freshman, took third in the high jump, clearing 6-feet, 0.75 inches (1.85 meters).
Senior Seb Gearhart was fourth in the mile in 4 minutes, 16.19 seconds.
Freshman Bill Mukhtar was eighth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.12.

The Panthers' 4x400 team of Mukhtar, Gearhart, Ben Daumueller and Chase Knoche took fourth in a time of 3:23.20.
JIMMY GRANT INVITATIONAL - University of Iowa
Cierra Laux took first place in the pole vault with a jump of 3.45-meters. Teammates Alivia Silvestri and Abbie Schwieder finished second and third with a jump of 3.30 meters and 3.15 meters, respectively.
Riley Todd placed third in the high jump with a height of 1 meter, 65 centimeters. Layanna Green took fourth with a jump of 1.60 meters. Marin McClowry finished eighth with a height of 1.60 meters.
Graduate student and transfer Caitlin Thilges led the women in the weight throw with a toss of 17.46 meters, landing her in fifth place. Mari Shavers finished sixth with a throw of 16.95 meters. Senior Marin Ehler and freshman Lexi Magnani finished in seventh and eighth place.
Junior Katie Fare finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 14.40 meters, only 20 centimeters from her personal best of 14.60 meters. Caitlin Thilges threw a personal best with a throw of 13.82 meters, improving by 21 centimeters. Marin Ehler finished eighth with a throw of 12.82 meters.
For the men, Darius King won the shot put with a throw of 19.24 meters and placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 18.80 meters. Freshman Jacob Baier made his weight debut with a throw of 14.31 meters landing him in sixth place. Freshman Matt Kapuska also made his debut in the shot put and weight, landing him eighth and seventh, respectively.
Matteo Cappello led the pole vaulters with a first place finish jump of 5.15 meters. Brendan Safley placed second with a jump of 4.75 meters. Teddy Allen and Matt Davis tied for third place with a jump of 4.00 meters. Sophomore Carter Morton rounded the field with a jump of 3.70 meters and a fifth-place finish.
Blair Brooks won the triple jump with a jump of 13.91 meters, and Casey Hackett finished second with a jump of 13.53 meters.
In the long jump, Parker Kiewiet placed second with a new personal best of 7.42 meters. Zack Butcher finished third, tying teammate Drew Bartels each with a jump of 7.29 meters. Blair Brooks finished fifth with a jump of 7.27 meters.
The Panthers' 4x400-meter relay team finished sixth. Carter Morton, Drew Bartels, Matt Davis, and Zach Butcher combined for a time of 3:26.00.
The Panthers will return to the University of Iowa Jan. 15 for the Iowa Invite.
