Panther track and field opens indoor season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The men's and women's track and field teams open their indoor track season this weekend on the road.Â
The Panthers will split the teams between the Iowa State Holiday Classic and the Jimmy Grant Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa.Â
At the Iowa State Holiday Classic, the teams include Drake and Indian Hills, beginning at noon CT. Teams the Panthers will compete against at the Jimmy Grant Invitational include the University of Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, and Drake, beginning at 10 a.m. CT.Â
The men come off a triumphant outdoor and indoor 2020-2021 season, winning both MVC Championships. Panthers to watch include three-time all-American and Olympic Trials finalist Darius King in the shot put. His best throw last year was 20.14 meters, set at the Gibson Invitational. King will be throwing at the Jimmy Grant Invitational in Iowa City.Â
Sprinter Isaiah Trousil will compete this weekend in the 60-meter dash, his best time was set last year at the Missouri Valley Indoor Championships with a time of 6.78 seconds that finished him second in the Valley.Â
Junior Jack Sumners is set to run in the 60-meter hurdles. His personal best is 8 seconds, set at the Missouri Valley Indoor Championships. Trousil and Sumners will race at the Iowa State Holiday Classic.Â
The women are set to build off a third-place finish in the Indoor MVC Championships and fifth-place finish outdoors.Â
Auriona Kimbrough is set to race at Iowa State, where she set her best time in the 400-meter dash (56.91) in 2020. Katie Fare is set to compete in the shot put, with her best toss of 14.60m set at the Tom Botts Invitational.Â
Graduate student and transfer Caitlin Thilges joined the Panthers this year from South Dakota State University to compete in the weight throw and shot put. Her best tosses are 13.61 meters in the shot put and 17.99 meters in the weight throw. Both Thilges and Fare will compete at the Jimmy Grant Invitational.Â
