CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program will send two athletes to the 2015 Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. The event will run June 10-13 at Track Town USA on the campus of the University of Oregon.
UNI is coming off of a successful outdoor season where they saw four athletes earn MVC titles in six different events along with countless all-conference honorees. The Panthers also sent 12 athletes competing in 15 events to the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas, advancing both Brandon Carnes and Justin Baker to the NCAA Championships in Eugene.
This marks the first trip to the championship meet for both Carnes and Baker, who both turned in top performances at the West Regional.
Carnes won his heat in the first round of the men's 200 meter dash in Austin and followed it up by finishing in the top-three in his heat in the quarterfinals, punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships.
In the shot put, Baker threw a huge personal-best of 61-6.75 on his third attempt to claim seventh place overall in the field. The throw secured his spot in Eugene and kept him ranked No. 2 all-time at UNI.
Both Baker and Carnes will start their road to a championship on Wednesday, June 10. Baker will compete in the men's shot put starting at 7:30 p.m. with Carnes in the 200 meter dash semifinal at 8:24 p.m.
The meet will air live on ESPN3, with Wednesday's broadcast beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
