Panther Cross Country Opens 2019 Season at Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- UNI cross country gears up for the first race of the 2019 cross country season, Friday in Iowa City.
The women are set to run a 4,000-meter course at 6 p.m., and the men run a 6,000-meter race at 6:45 P.M. at Iowa's Ashton Course. The Panthers meet in-state rivals Iowa and Iowa State, while also catching a glimpse of the Missouri Valley Conference with Drake and Illinois State competing. Other colleges noted this weekend are Iowa Central Community College and Stephens-College-Columbia's women's team.
All-conference honoree McKayla Cole returns for her junior season to lead the UNI women. Gabby Champion finished 11th last year at this meet, Paige Holub finished 21st and Tess Roorda finished 24th. Other notable women racing is senior McKayla Cole who did not compete in this meet last year but competed well throughout the rest of the 2018 season.
The men return with a strong leadership including All-Conference honoree Wal Khat and fellow senior CJ May.
Other veterans to return on the men's side includes Sam McCool who finished 28th at this meet a year ago, Drake Henrichs who finished 32nd, and Logan Murray who finished 39th.
Freshmen Corrine Gadient, Cassidy Ihns, Sadie Juergens, and Abby Riley are set to run their first race in purple for the women's squad and David Holesinger joins the Panther men.
