DES MOINES, Iowa – UNI softball dropped both of its games to the Bulldogs in Des Moines on Tuesday.
Northern Iowa at Drake | Final Score – L, 3-1
Emma Olejniczak lasted only two innings in her start against Drake, as she struggled with command in walking five batters and giving up two base hits, which led to three runs (two earned). Olejniczak struck out three Bulldogs.
Brooke Craig pitched four scoreless innings in relief, as she struck out one batter and walked one. Craig allowed only two base hits and ten of her twelve recorded outs were groundouts.
The UNI offense struggled early with runners in scoring position, as they loaded the bases in the top of the second with no outs but failed to bring a run home. Sammey Bunch led off the third inning with a double but was stranded on third base.
After Bunch reached on an error in the fifth inning, Adara Opiola followed with a roller to third base that the Drake fielder bobbled, putting runners on the corners with one out. Opiola was caught stealing to end the inning, but Bunch was able to score first and give the Panthers their first run.
The Panthers left seven runners on base and struck out 12 times leading to the low-scoring effort against Drake's Nicole Newman.
Northern Iowa at Drake | Final Score – L, 11-3 (5 inn.)
Jaclyn Spencer allowed six runs to score against her in her start against Drake. Spencer pitched two and a third innings walking five batters and giving up six base hits. She struck out one batter, which was the only strikeout for UNI pitchers.
Hannah Kelley pitched in relief and allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning. She walked two batters and gave up four base hits. Craig pitched an inning of relief, allowing one run to score on four base hits.
The first UNI run scored against Drake came in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk to Bunch.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Panthers got back to back home runs from Courtney Krodinger and Ashley Chesser to cut into the Drake lead but were unable to score any more runs to halt the run rule.
