UNI Softball Finishes Valparaiso Series with a Sweep

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI softball finished off its sweep of Valparaiso with a 11-3 victory on Sunday.
Northern Iowa vs. Valparaiso | Final Score – W, 11-3
Brooke Craig picked up her fifth victory of the season, as the senior went four innings, and allowed three runs (two earned). Craig struck out three batters, while walking one and giving up seven base hits.
Erica Oler came into the game in the fifth inning with two runners on and no outs and got out of the inning without allowing a run. Oler struck out two batters and walked one en route to her second-career pitching save.
After trailing by three runs early in the game, the Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the third with a Sammey Bunch solo home run to left field. The home run extended the career season for Bunch, and she homered for her third time in the series against the Crusaders. Bunch now has 16 home runs and 44 RBI in 2019. Bunch needs four home runs to tie the UNI career record for home runs (30).
Adara Opiola followed up with an RBI double into left center to score Ashley Chesser. With two runners on, Emma Valainis lined a three-run home run to the opposite field to give the Panthers the 5-2 lead.
UNI would tack on the final six runs in the fifth inning on a grand slam off the bat of Brittney Krodinger and back to back walks to end the game. B. Krodinger is tied for second on the team with eight home runs.
The Panthers outscored the Crusaders 36-4 in the series, and the team picked up its first three-game series sweep of an opponent in the 2019 season.
UP NEXT –
The Panthers head to Ames, Iowa for an intrastate matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones. The two teams will square off on Tuesday, April 16 with a first pitch time of 4:00 p.m.
Following the game against Iowa State, UNI will return home for a three-game series with the Bradley Braves. The Panthers will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 19, beginning at 12:00 p.m., and a single game on Saturday, April 20, starting at 11:00 a.m.
