UNI Softball Powers Its Way Past Valparaiso

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI softball outscored the Valparaiso Crusaders, 25-1, in its two games on Saturday.
Northern Iowa vs. Valparaiso | Final Score – W, 17-1
Emma Olejniczak allowed just one run in her sixth victory of the season, as she held the Crusaders to six hits over five innings. Olejniczak struck out four batters and is now 2-0 against Valparaiso in her young career.
After trailing by a run early, the Panthers jumped back into it in a three-run second inning that saw them score all three runs on bases loaded walks.
UNI put together a six-run third inning with a two run home run from Ashley Chesser, which was her eighth home run of the season. The other four runs in the inning were scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch, and three more walks to UNI batters with the bases loaded.
The fourth inning consisted of home runs from Sammey Bunch and Courtney Krodinger as well as a two-run double from Emma Valainis. Bunch's home run was a bases loaded grand slam which also tied the UNI single-season record (14) for home runs in a season. C. Krodinger homered with a runner on, for her sixth long ball of 2019.
Every player that recorded a plate appearance for the Panthers reached base and the team was able to record 13 walks. Six different UNI batters finished with two or more RBI, and Bunch led the way with five RBI in the game.
The last time that the Panthers beat an opponent by at least 15 runs, was in 2014 in a 15-0 win over Southern University.
Northern Iowa vs. Valparaiso | Final Score – W, 8-0
Jaclyn Spencer was phenomenal against the Crusaders in game two, as she went six innings for the complete game shutout and struck out seven batters. Spencer only gave up two base hits while walking two. It was Spencer's fourth complete game in six starts this season, and she now has three shutouts.
The Panthers got off to an early lead after a C. Krodinger sacrifice fly that brought home Brittney Krodinger. The sacrifice fly was C. Krodinger's fifth of the season, which is tied for second in UNI's single season history.
The second inning for the Panthers consisted of three home runs, including back-to-back home runs by B. Krodinger and Bunch. Valainis kicked off the scoring for the second with a two-run shot to right center field, for her first-career home run. B. Krodinger also went to the opposite field for the second two-run home run of the inning.
Bunch followed B. Krodinger's shot with a solo home run, which was her 15th of the season, and put her in sole possession of first in UNI's history for single-season home runs.
UNI would be held scoreless until the sixth inning, when Olivia Brooks lined a single into left to score B. Krodinger, and C. Krodinger doubled into right center to score Brooks and walk it off for the Panthers.

The Panthers finish off their series with the Crusaders on Sunday, April 14 with the first pitch time set for 12:00 p.m.
UNI will look to break their recent struggles in the series finales of three-game series against conference opponents, as the Panthers are 0-3 in such games.
