
Panthers Close Out Drake Relays on High Note

DRAKE RESULTS
DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program capped a successful stint at the 2018 Drake Relays on Saturday, with the Panthers earning top-10 finishes in 12 events.
A total of 31 Panther names were etched in the top-10 on the final day of the Drake Relays, as UNI closed out its four-day stay in Des Moines. With the conclusion of the Drake Relays, the Panthers will have just one more meet before the 2018 MVC Outdoor Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.
UNI had one team each from the men and women's side place in the top-5 in the 1600 sprint medley relay, with the team of Chyna Watson-Reid, Maddie Irmen, Maddie Bell and Lyndsie Schinkel (4th, 3:52.73) as well as Corey Hertz, Sven Van Den Bergh, Evan Long and Seb Gearhart (5th, 3:25.27) each performed well in the event. The time for the women's 1600 sprint medley relay of 3:52.73 broke a school record at UNI. The 4x400 relay team of Bryce Newcomb, Sven Van Den Bergh and Jojo Frost closed out relay action with a fifth-place finish in their respective event, after a time of 3:10.21.
Panthers Jacob Smith (4th, 50.94) and Jojo Frost (5th, 51.46) finished fourth and fifth overall in the 400-hurdles, with UNI being the team to place two runners from the same school in the top-5 for the event. The time of 50.94 for Smith ranks 17th nationally.
Brette Correy continued her stellar senior season with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter, after clocking a time of 2:09.13 in the event. Fellow senior Jordan Pingel finished seventh in the same event on the men's side, after a time of 1:51.02.
In field action, UNI had two Panthers earn top-10 showings in throw events with Thomas Yezek placing fifth in the discus with a mark of 170-09, while Sarah Pate finished sixth in the hammer after a heave of 193-08. Senior Kassidy Sharp placed fifth overall in the high jump to cap field action, after a mark of 5-08 on Saturday.
UP NEXT
Following this week's action in Des Moines, the Panthers will compete at the Wisconsin Twilight on Friday, May 4 in Madison. The Panthers will compete at the MVC Outdoor Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana on May 11-13.
