UNI Softball Takes Down Kansas in Jayhawk Invitational

Cedar Falls, Iowa – The Panthers split their opening day doubleheader of the Jayhawk Invitational, losing to Nebraska, 6-3, before beating Kansas, 8-4.
Northern Iowa vs. University of Nebraska | Final Score – L, 6-3
Jaclyn Spencer got the start in game one of the double header on Friday, pitching five innings and giving up five runs (four earned), while striking out six Cornhuskers. Spencer suffered her fourth loss of the season in the game. On the season, Spencer is 6-4 with a 2.64 ERA. Freshman Emma Olejniczak came on in relief, pitching two innings and giving up one run, with two strikeouts.
UNI scored first in the game, on a first inning Kennedy Bailey single into center field, which drove in Sammey Bunch. Nebraska went on a 5-0 scoring run, before the Panthers tacked on two in the fifth inning. Brittney Roby drove in two runners on a double to left center, which brought UNI within two of the Cornhuskers. The Panthers were not able to complete the comeback, however, suffering a three-run defeat.

The Panthers bounced back in the second game of the doubleheader, beating the Kansas Jayhawks 8-4, for the seventh win against the Jayhawks in UNI Softball history.
Brooke Craig went five strong innings in her start on Friday, allowing three runs and striking out one batter for her sixth win of the season. Spencer went two innings in relief, allowing one run and striking out for Jayhawks.
The Panthers scored all eight of their runs in the third inning, while bringing twelve batters to the plate in the inning. Adara Opiola, Bailey, and Roby each had two-RBI base hits in the inning, while Claire Dudek also tacked on an RBI and Bunch came home to score on a wild pitch.
Eight out of nine UNI starters registered a base hit against the Jayhawks on Friday. Roby, the NCAA's leader in hits, finished with three hits for her 11th multi-hit game of the season. Roby is currently on a nine-game hit streak, and has recorded a hit in 15 of her last 16 games.

The Panthers are set to rematch against the Green Bay Phoenix and University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos on Saturday, in the second day of the Jayhawk Invitational.
