
Panthers Take Nine Events at Mark Messersmith

MARK MESSERSMITH RESULTS
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program turned in another successful home meet on Saturday, as the Panthers won nine events in the Mark Messersmith Invitational.
The men won the Mark Messersmith team competition, scoring 146.5 points to defeat Indiana State (133), South Dakota State (53), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (50.33), Loyola (25.33), Drake (19.83) and Wartburg (4). The women (118) finished runner-up behind the Sycamores (163), while beating out five other squads (Drake – 43.5, SDSU- 38, Wisconsin-Milwaukee- 35.5, Loyola-32, Wartburg-2).
The Panthers began the day with the men and women sweeping the high jump, as Xavior Williams (6-06.75) and Kassidy Sharp (5-05.00) won their events. The victory for Williams in the high jump was his second of the season, while Sharp won the event for the first time in 2018.
Isaac Holtz continued the field success with a victory in the shot put, after earning a mark of 56-01.00. Holtz was joined by three teammates in the final standings as Darius King (55-11.25), Keegan Tritle (55-09.00) and William Blaser (55-03.00) took spots 2-4.
Moving into track competition, Isaiah Trousil improved his mark in the 60-meter dash by running a personal-best 6.84 to take the event for the first time this season. Trousil turned in another personal-best time in the 200-meter, blowing by the field to win with a 21.93.
Maddie Bell ran a 56.52 in the 400-meter to earn her third win of the season, all coming in different events for the junior. Jacob Smith took the 400-meter on the men's side running a 48.53 for his first win of the season, while teammates Jojo Frost (48.66), Evan Long (48.96) and Sven Van Den Bergh (49.39) took spots 2-4 in the event.
Seb Gearhart won the first distance event for the Panthers, after running a 1:54.31 in the 800-meter for his first victory at UNI. The 4x400 men's relay was dominated by Panther runners as Frost, Smith, Long and Van Den Bergh (3:16.01) took first place overall. The relay teams of Bryce Newcomb, Connor Blough, Blake Langhurst and Jack Butteris (3:20.39) and Tyler Bartz, Hunter Lavallee, Gearhart and Carter Von Essen (3:21.67) placed second and third.

The Panthers have two meets next weekend as UNI travels to the Meyo Invitational and the Frank Sevigne Invitational on Feb. 2-3.
