CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Heading into the home stretch of the regular season, the University of Northern Iowa men's and women's cross country teams travel to South Bend, Ind., on Friday for the Joe Piane Invitational.
The Notre Dame-hosted event, in its 61st year, will feature 13 nationally-ranked teams. Both men's and women's teams will compete in the Gold Races, with the men running a 5-mile course and the women taking on a 5K. The women will begin at 3:15 p.m. CT, while the men will commence at 4 p.m. CT.
"We want to build from week-to-week and follow the process," head coach Dave Paulsen said. "The Joe Piane Invite features a lot of talent and it'll be a great test for our team. We believe in getting better each time we race, and Friday will be another opportunity to do that."
UNI will face 22 teams on the men's side, with four being from the MVC while the women will face 27 teams and three being from the MVC. The Panthers will have eight competitors for both the men and women.
Last time out, the Panther women placed all nine racers in the top 30 at the Wisconsin Mayflower Day Open, with 2016 MVC Freshman of the Year Hannah Truniger turning in a third-place showing in her first action of the season. Truniger paced the Panthers with a 21:55.2 in the 6K.
UNI's Ashley Norem (6th place), Brette Correy (8th place) and Tiffany Christensen (10th place) all placed in the top 10 for the Panthers in Madison. Freshman McKayla Cole was just shy of a top-10 finish as she came in at 11th overall.
Truniger, Norem, Correy, Christensen and Cole will be joined by the Panther trio of Lyndsie Schinkel, Gabby Skopec and Alyssa Williams in South Bend.
On the men's side, CJ May is fresh off his best finish as a Panther after earning fifth overall at the Mayflower Day Open. Alex Jackson (10th place), Ethan Smith (11th place) and Logan Murray (14th place) all posted top-15 finishes as well in the Mayflower Day Open 8K. The Panther quartet will be joined by Ben Ahlrichs, Luke Johnston, Mitch Pritts and Dillon Timmerman at the Joe Piane Invite.
