
UNI Soccer Wins Thriller to Open MVC Action

Waterloo, Iowa---The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team won an overtime thriller against preseason favorite Illinois State, 1-0.
The Panthers lone goal came from junior Brynell Yount in the 91st minute. Sydney Hayden assisted Yount after taking possession of the ball in near midfield.
The Redbirds out shot the Panthers 12 to 9. MVC Defensive Player of the Week Haley Smith defended against six Panthers goals.
"I thought for a better part of the game we had the better chances," remarked UNI head coach Bruce Erickson.
UNI goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger had three saves during the game.
With temperatures reaching near 90 degrees, the heat affected both teams. "I think they (Illinois State) may have dealt with the heat better but I thought we handled it well," commented Erickson.
The Panthers are at home Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. hosting Evansville.Â

In the NCAA rankings, MVC Offensive Player of the Week Sarah Brandt is tied for the No. 1 spot for game-winning goals. Brandt has had four game-winning goals this season and leads the MVC. Junior goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger sits in a tie for the No. 4 spot in shutouts this season and leads the MVC, with six shutouts.Â
Reichenberger leads the MVC goalies in three categories. Reichenberger has allowed five goals in nine games, having .542 goals against average. Reichenberger has 32 saves for a .865 save percentage.Â
