
Panthers Prepped For Husker Spring Invitational

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program is set to compete in the Husker Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 8 in Lincoln, Neb.
The Panthers are traveling 34 men and 26 women to the meet which gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the hammer throw. Events on the track begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Ed Weir Track.
UNI is just two meets into the outdoor season and already have six athletes in qualifying spots for the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas, May 25-27. Only 48 athletes in each event can qualify for the regional.
Brandon Carnes currently ranks second in the 100 and third in the 200 meters in the NCAA West Region after his outstanding performances at the Florida Relays. The Bradenton, Fla., native broke the UNI and MVC record in the 100 meter dash and won the 200 meters in Gainesville, Fla., over the weekend, earning MVC Track Athlete of the Week honors.
The Panthers have three hurdlers sitting in the top-48 in the West with Jon Rus, Cole Phillips and Daurice Fountain all starting the season strong. Rus ranks No. 16 after winning the 110 meter hurdles at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic with a time of 14.18 while Phillips and Fountain will look to improve their 39th and 48th place rankings this weekend.
On the women's side, Hope Koerperich launched herself into the top-48 in the West in the discus throw last weekend at the Wartburg Outdoor Select, throwing a PR of 162-9.00 to win the event. Sarah Pate also ranks high in the NCAA West Regional after throwing 195-6.00 in the hammer throw at Wartburg, pushing her to No. 20 through two meets.
