CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team was defeated by its intra-state rivals, the Iowa Hawkeyes, on Tuesday evening, 4-2.

Despite a seventh inning glimpse of hope, UNI (20-15, 8-4 MVC) was taken down by Iowa (10-23, 3-6 Big Ten).

The Hawkeyes used a two-out rally in the top of the first to build a 4-0 advantage against Panther starter Bailey Lange. The big blow came on a three-run homer by Mallory Killian.

UNI was retired in order in each of the first two innings. Sammey Bunch was the first Panther to reach base when she led off the third inning being hit by a pitch.

Macey Wolfe tallied the first hit of the night for the Panthers when she posted a home run to left field to cut the Iowa lead to 4-1.

Lange and Alyssa Buchanan held the Hawks off the scoreboard the rest of the way, while the Panther batters gave it one more shot in the bottom of the seventh.

Tianna Drahn would lead off the inning with a single to third. Brittney Krodinger then flew out to center for the first out. Brittany Roby followed with a single through the left side of the infield to put runners on first and second. Wolfe recorded her third hit of the night to load the bases with only one out.

Jaclyn Spencer struck out after taking the count full. Anna Varriano laced an RBI single to left field to cut the Iowa lead to 4-2 and leave the bases loaded for Buchanan.

However, Buchanan lined out to third to end the threat and allow the Hawks to score the 4-2 victory.

Next up for the Panthers will be a three-game series against Bradley. A doubleheader on Fri., April 14, beginning at noon, and the final game will be Sat., April 15 at 11 a.m.. An Easter egg hunt will follow the game on Saturday.
