Panthers Fall to Nebraska

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa---The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming and diving team fell to the Nebraska Huskers this evening.
The Panthers saw strong performances from Katie Taylor, Molly Lembezeder, Kylie Engstrom, Moriah Ross and Crystal Florman.
The Panthers opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The Panther team of Taylor, Ross, Florman and Lembezeder swam a time of 1:45.28.
Taylor edged out Nebraska's Autumn Haebig in the 200 freestyle, taking first place with time of one minute, fifty-two seconds and 13 hundredths of a second. Taylor took first place in the 100 backstroke, timing in at 55.93.
Lembezeder took first place in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, timing in at 24.11 and 52.65 respectively.
Engstrom led the Panthers in the distance races, taking third in the 1000 freestyle and fourth in the 500 freestyle. Engstrom timed in at 5:15.19 in the 500 and 10:36.76 in the 1000.
"We raced a really tough opponent today and have made improvements from last week," remarked UNI head coach Nick Lakin. Â
Ross swam into second place in the 200 IM, timing in at 2:07.92. Nebraska's Jordan Ehly followed in third with a time of 2:08.02. Ross took second in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a 1:05.40.
Florman nabbed second place in the 50 freestyle, timing in at 24.39. Florman would take third in the 100 butterfly, swimming a 57.89.
Tina Meyer, Maddie Bagby, Jenna Willer and Maya Appleton took fifth in the 200 freestyle relay, swimming a 1:43.10.
"We loved getting off the bat with the Big Ten teams that we have faced," noted Lakin.
In the diving well, Hannah Brummel led the Panthers in the 3-meter dives, scoring a 227.46 for fourth place. Izzy Bunchek scored a 217.65 for fifth, while Alyssa Deuso took sixth with a score of 204.67.
"I was looking for big improvements from last week and Izzy did a great job from last week," commented diving coach Lori Meierbachtol.
Bunchek led the Panthers in the 1-meter dives, taking third-place with a score of 242.47. Deuso followed in fifth, scoring a 211.64. Brummel rounded the Panthers out, receiving a dive score of 207.67.
The Panthers return to action on Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. hosting Sioux Falls.Â
