CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team had no troubles manufacturing runs in their doubleheader contest against Loyola on Saturday afternoon, racking up 21 hits to take both games on the day. Five homeruns propelled the Panthers (29-13, 8-4 MVC) to an 8-1 win in game one before taking game two in five innings, 12-0. UNI grabbed double-digit hits in each contests, making it the fourth and fifth straight MVC games where the Panthers have done so.
Caitlin Wnek hit the first home run of the day for the Panthers in the second inning, a leadoff shot to left field. Kennedy Bailey followed with one of her own a batter later to put UNI ahead 2-0.
Chelsea Ross extended the UNI lead to four via the long ball in the bottom of the third with a two-run bomb to left field. The home run marked her team-leading eighth to go along with her team-best 37 RBI. Ross was a force in the circle as well for the Panthers, striking out 11 Rambler hitters while allowing just one run and two hits. Ross tossed four inning of no-hit softball before Loyola grabbed their first hit in the fifth inning, later scoring on a Erica Nagel RBI single for their lone score of the game.
UNI would go on to hit two more long balls in the fifth inning, beginning with a Micalla Rettinger leadoff home run to straight away center field. Bailey Lange added to the lead on a RBI double that scored a pinch-running Kate Kinnetz. Kennedy Bailey followed with her second homer of the day, her third of the year, to put UNI up 8-1. Earlier in the fourth inning, Bailey recorded walk number 32 of the season, moving into third at UNI for most walks in a season as she passed Jen Larsen.
The UNI bats stayed hot in game two, beginning with Wnek's second homer of the day, a two-run shot that put the Panthers up 2-0 in the first inning.
After three straight singles loaded the bases in the third, Bailey smacked her third homer of the day, this one a grand slam to give her seven RBI on the day and UNI a 6-0 advantage. Kristin Lock followed with a RBI double later in the inning before Samantha Olson drove in a run to bring the score to 8-0. UNI took advantage of some Rambler mistakes later in the inning as three runs scored on a Wnek ball in play.
Macey Wolfe added the final run of the day in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 12-0.
UNI and LUC will return to Robinson-Dresser tomorrow for game-three beginning at noon.
