Panthers Clinch Series in Game Three, Defeat WSU 7-4

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team took their three game series against Wichita State with a game three victory, downing the Shockers 7-4 in the finale Sunday afternoon.

UNI (22-7, 2-1 MVC) hurt themselves defensively in the first inning as the Shockers took advantage of a Panther error with two outs, scoring a run to take an early lead. Cacy Williams extended their lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to grab a 2-0 advantage.

The Panthers got all the offense they would need in the fourth inning as Alyssa Buchanan's fourth home run of the season tied things up as she recorded her 17^th and 18^th RBI of the year. Buchanan sent a shot over the wall in center field to score Kennedy Bailey and bring the score to 2-2. Pinch hitting later in the inning, Brittany Krodinger came through with a RBI double off the wall in left-center to bring home Courtney Krodinger and help her team grab a 3-2 lead. Chelsea Ross was walked for the fifth time this series with two down in the inning to load the bases before a Caitlin Wnek walk brought in another run.

Kristin Lock brought two in to score on a single that ricocheted off the bag at third for her 15^th RBI of the season. After fighting off multiple pitches to stay alive at the plate, Bailey forced the WSU third basemen into a tough play, reaching first while Wnek hustled to the plate from second to put UNI's lead at five, 7-2.

WSU made things interesting in the final inning, loading the bases and scoring two runs to bring the final score to 7-4.

UNI will take a break from conference play when they host Missouri at Robinson-Dresser Wednesday, Mar. 23 at 4 p.m. before resuming Missouri Valley Conference play at Evansville on Friday.
