UNI Takes Two on Second Day of UNI-Dome Classic

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team earned two wins on Saturday evening, defeating Green Bay 14-0 in five innings before going on to down South Dakota State 6-4 in a tightly contested ball game.

The Panthers' (2-2) offense came out of the gate strong in the first contest of the night, scoring 14 runs in the first two innings against Green Bay. Caitlin Wnek started off the scoring run with a sacrifice fly with the bases-loaded and no outs to put UNI on the board. After three straight bases-loaded walks to put UNI ahead 4-0, Samantha Olson sent a RBI single to center field before a Phoenix error allowed another Panther to score.

UNI kept the bats going in the following inning, beginning with a Kennedy Bailey RBI double. Two batters later Brittany Krodinger tallied a two RBI single to put UNI up ten runs. After a Micalla Rettinger RBI single, Chelsea Ross smashed her first home run of the season to put UNI ahead 14-0.

The second game proved opposite of the first contest in the opening four and a half innings as both teams were held scoreless due to some strong performances in the circle. For the Panthers, Ross finished with 10 strikeouts while allowing five hits in the win.

Rettinger broke the scoreless drought with her second RBI single of the evening before Ross followed with a two RBI double to put UNI up 3-0. The Panthers added to their lead on a squeeze bunt from Wnek that scored Rettinger and put her team up four.

South Dakota State answered back with two-run home runs from Abbey Murphy and Jordyn Sturgeon in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, UNI got some solid work from the Krodinger twins at the plate to regain the lead. Courtney Krodinger laid down a sacrifice bunt to move two Panthers into scoring position with one out. Her sister Brittany followed up with her third and fourth RBI of the evening, singling to center field with two outs to help UNI secure a 6-4 victory.

The Panthers will wrap up UNI-Dome Classic play tomorrow beginning with a rematch against the Jacks at 2:45 p.m. before playing the final game of the tournament against Western Illinois at 7:15 p.m.
