CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team earned two run-rule victories on Sunday at the UNI-Dome Classic, defeating South Dakota State 11-2 in five innings before shutting out Western Illinois in five, 8-0. The Panthers (4-2) won four straight games at their annual tournament after dropping two on the first day of play.
UNI's offense picked up where it left off on Saturday in their first game against the Jacks. After the Panthers allowed one run in the top of the first, Brittany Krodinger earned a leadoff single before moving into scoring position via a stolen base. Micalla Rettinger capitalized, bringing Krodinger home to score. Caitlin Wnek followed with a RBI double to give UNI a 2-1 lead.
The offense stayed productive in the bottom of the second as Samantha Olson and Rettinger tallied RBI singles before Chelsea Ross recorded her third homerun of the weekend, putting UNI ahead 6-1. Over the weekend, Ross tallied a .750 slugging percentage while adding a tied-for team high seven RBI.
Kristin Lock grabbed her first RBI of the season in the bottom of the fourth as she sent a double to the outfield, bringing Brittany Krodinger and Ross across to score with two outs and the bases loaded. The Panthers capitalized on a few SDSU errors later in the inning to take an 11-2 lead.
Ross began contest two of the evening in the circle, tossing two shutout innings before being replaced by Alyssa Buchanan in a 0-0 contest. Buchanan finished out the game, throwing three complete innings while holding Western Illinois to two hits while striking out four.
On offense, UNI put together a multi-run inning in the bottom of the third, scoring three to grab a 3-0 lead. Brittany Krodinger led the inning off with a walk before Rettinger tripled on the first pitch of her at-bat. Rettinger finished the weekend with six RBI and a .421 batting average.
Wnek grabbed a RBI before scoring from second on a WIU error to end the UNI scoring for the inning. The shortstop followed up with a three-run blast to left field in the bottom of the fourth, her first of the year, put her team up 6-0.
Anna Varriano capped off the UNI victory with a two-run walk-off shot to center field after being called in to pinch hit.
The Panthers will travel to Tempe, Ariz. on Friday and will begin play on the campus of Arizona State at 11 a.m. against Montana before taking on Michigan State that evening at 5:45 p.m.
