
Kirchoff Captures 5,000 Meter Record At Iowa State Classic

AMES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program wrapped up competition at the Iowa State Classic today, capturing a school record and personal-bests along the way.
Junior Kelsey Kirchoff got the Panthers started in the 5,000 meter run, setting a new school record in the process. Kirchoff finished in the top-30, running a personal-best time of 16:52.61, the fourth fastest time in the Missouri Valley this season. Trai Bunch also turned in a personal-best in the men's race, running a 40-second PR with a time of 14:43.01.
The Panthers had three career-bests in the men's 800 meter race with Jordan Pingel, Luke Johnston and Andrew Arndt all turning in strong performances. Pingel finished with a time of 1:53.18 with Johnston and Arndt coming in at 1:53.39 and 1:54.82, respectively.
In the men's and women's 400 meter dashes, the Panthers had seven athletes competing, with all seven scoring PRs. Maddie Beeler (56.16) and Maddie Bell (56.63) turned in the top two times for the Panther women while Corey Hertz (48.55) and Evan Long (48.93) posted the men's fastest times.
Moving into the short sprints, Tanner Dunkin finished with a personal-best in the men's 200 meter dash, finishing second in his heat with a time of 22.11. Raheem Black also finished with a career-best in the race, finishing with a time of 22.21.
In the field, Shawn Koch picked up a win in the men's triple jump, notching a mark of 48-7.25 for the victory. Weston Riesselman also turned in a top-five performance in the long jump, going for a season-best leap of 23-5.25 for a fourth place finish. Rounding out UNI's top field performances of the day was Brad Walski winning his flight of the weight throw with a PR toss of 59-11.75.
The Panthers wrapped up the meet with two season-best performances in the 4X400 meter relay. The team of Paige Knodle, Maddie Irmen, Bell and Beeler ran a time of 3:46.70, the third fastest time in the MVC. On the men's side, the team of Evan Long, Brett McCalla, Hertz and Black ran a fast time of 3:13.65, keeping the Panthers first in the conference.
The UNI track and field team will return to action on Feb. 19 when they compete in the South Dakota State University Tune Up meet prior to hosting the MVC Indoor Championships Feb. 27-28.
