Iowa State Tops UNI In In-State Battle, 76-68

AMES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team battled Iowa State to the final minutes of the game, but fell to the Cyclones, 74-68. UNI is 1-1 overall this season.
The Panthers tied the game twice in the third quarter, but foul trouble got the best of UNI, allowing the Cyclones to score key points at the line. UNI was led by senior Madison Weekly, who scored 15 points, adding a career-high seven assists.
Hannah Schonhardt chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Angie Davison scored a career-high 12 points. Ellie Herzberg rounded out UNI's double-digit scorers with 12 of her own.
UNI trailed 15-11 heading into the second quarter after both teams struggled to get into a shooting rhythm in the first. UNI shot 20-percent from the field while Iowa State only managed to shoot 33-percent. Davison led the Panthers in the first quarter with five points, also adding a steal that led to fast break points from Herzberg.

UNI improved in the second quarter, shooting 42-percent from the field, including a key three-pointer from Davison with 7:00 on the clock to tie the score 19-19. Iowa State was able to take an eight point lead with 2:49 left in the quarter after a series of runs, but UNI countered with an 8-3 run of its own capped off by a jumper from Schonhardt with 35 seconds left on the clock to send UNI down 34-30 at halftime.
UNI continued to press the Cyclones with Megan Maahs cutting the Iowa State lead to three points with a spin move under the basket. It turned into a 7-2 run for the Panthers with five points coming from Schonhardt, including a turnaround jumper that made it 43-43 with 4:59 left in the third quarter. After Herzberg tied the score 45-45 with a jump shot of her own, the Panthers got into foul trouble with Iowa State pulling away thanks to free throws, eventually heading into the fourth with a 54-47 lead.
The Panthers opened the fourth quarter on a scoring drought, but quickly snapped out of it when Schonhardt and Mikaela Morgan hit back-to-back threes to cut the Cyclone lead to 61-57 with 5:46 left in the game. Unfortunately for the Panthers, foul trouble plagued them down the line with the Cyclones going 7-for-8 from the charity strip in the fourth. Weekly hit two free throws with less than a minute to play followed by a layup from Kennedy Kirkpatrick with 25 seconds left, but the Panthers eventually fell 74-68.
UNI returns to action when they host Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday, Nov. 20 for its home opener. The game is set for a 2 p.m. CT tip off on ESPN3.
