UNI Defeats Wisconsin-Parkside, 72-57

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team defeated the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 72-57 on Sunday afternoon, improving to 2-1 overall this season.
UNI had three double-digit scorers against the Rangers with Madison Weekly scoring a game-high 15 points. Kennedy Kirkpatrick added 14 points with a career-high nine rebounds while Mikaela Morgan contributed 10 points with a career-high five dimes. Leading the Panthers in rebounds against Wisconsin-Parkside was Megan Maahs who almost pulled off a double-double with eight points and 11 boards.
UNI held the Rangers to just four made field goals in the first quarter, outscoring them 21-9. The Panthers shot 35-percent from the field with the difference being the rebounding game. UNI outrebounded Wisconsin-Parkside 16-5 in the first quarter while forcing seven turnovers.
Weekly got hot from the arc in the second quarter, scoring back-to-back three pointers to give UNI a 32-14 lead with 5:52 left to play. UNI continued to be strong on the boards with Hannah Schonhardt grabbing four in the quarter. The Panthers headed into halftime with a 40-20 lead after Morgan was able to sneak in a layup with less than two minutes to play.
The Panthers struggled in the third quarter, only shooting 10-percent from the arc, allowing the Rangers to outscore them 22-19. The Rangers hit back-to-back three-pointers late in the quarter from Olivia Montague, cutting the UNI lead to just 13 points, but Heidi Hillyard hit two free throws to finish the quarter to give UNI a 59-42 advantage.
UNI got the youth movement going in the fourth quarter with Mariah Criswell and Abby Gerrits both getting critical minutes. Hayley Maystead hit a three for the Rangers with 1:08 left in the game, but UNI's advantage was too much for the Rangers, coming away with the 72-57 victory.
UNI returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 23 when they take on Oklahoma State on the road at 7 p.m. CT. UNI will stay on the road the rest of the week, also participating in the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Tournament Nov.25-26 against Idaho and Denver.
