Panthers Beat The Braves, 55-47

PEORIA, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team beat the Bradley Braves on Sunday afternoon, posting a 55-47 win on the road. UNI improved to 12-8 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Madison Weekly led all scorers with 18 points, scoring 13 in the second half. Amber Sorenson chipped in 14 points while Stephanie Davison added 12 points and a season-high four assists.
UNI gained a 4-2 lead to start the game thanks in part to some stingy defense from the Panthers, forcing four turnovers while keeping Bradley scoreless for over three minutes. The Panthers turned it into a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Sorenson at the 5:50 mark.
Both teams struggled late in the first quarter, shooting a combined 4-of-18 from the field, with UNI taking a 12-7 lead. The Panthers continued to play strong team defense, forcing Bradley to another scoring drought for the remaining four minutes of the quarter.
Bradley tied the score 14-14 with 6:05 left in the second quarter after the Braves scored five unanswered points, but UNI countered with a 6-0 run while holding Bradley to another scoring drought for 3:15, taking a 20-14. The Braves were then able to cut the Panther lead to 20-19, holding UNI to just 1-of-6 from the field in the last four minutes of the half.
The Braves opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run, making it 27-22 on two free throws with 5:38 on the clock. UNI answered with a 9-0 run of their own allowing the Panthers to take a 33-29 lead after Hannah Schonhardt hit a key three and Weekly scored a layup to give them a four-point lead.
The Panthers and Bradley traded the lead to start the fourth quarter, with UNI eventually taking a 40-36 lead after going 3-for-3 from the field with 6:46 left in the game. Bradley was then able to tie the game 41-41 at the 3:28 mark on a layup from Whitney Tinjum.
UNI countered with a 9-0 run, sparked by a three from Sorenson, putting the Panthers up 50-41 with less than two minutes to play in the game. Despite Bradley going 3-of-3 from the field to cut the UNI lead to five points, UNI was able to hold onto its 55-47 win on clutch free throw shooting from Sharnae Lamar, Weekly and Jen Keitel.
The Panthers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5 when they take on Missouri State in the McLeod Center at 7 p.m. CT.

- After scoring 18 points against Bradley, Madison Weekly is just 20 points away from reaching 1,000 career points. She has scored in double-figures in six consecutive games and 18 times this year.
