BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field program opened the 2015-16 track and field season at the South Dakota State Holiday Open, coming away with seven individual wins.
Senior Jamie Lindstrom got things started for the Panthers in the field events, winning the weight throw with a toss of 60-8.00. She also placed second overall in the shot put, throwing for a mark of 48-6.75.
On the men's side, Shawn Koch came away victorious in both the long jump and the triple jump. He finished with a leap of 48-7.50 in the triple jump and followed it up with a strong mark of 23-8.25 for the win.
Brandon Carnes kicked off the events on the track, winning the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.70. His blazing time was just .01 off his PR and school record time that he set last season.
Junior Brett McCalla followed it up with a win of his own, posting a time of 34.47 in the men's 300 meter dash for a first-place finish, good enough for third all-time at UNI. True freshman Corey Hertz finished right behind McCalla in second place, running a time of 34.53, the fourth fastest time in school history.
UNI won both the men's and the women's 1,000 meter run, with Jordan Pingel and Amber Clock picking up wins in their events. Pingel ran a personal-best time of 2:37.73 while Clock finished with a career-best time of 2:57.17.
Paige Knodle made her return to the track, placing second overall in the women's 300 meter dash and the 60 meter hurdles (8.60). Her time of 40.18 in the 300 meters ranks her fifth all-time at UNI.
UNI will return to action on Jan. 16 when they host the Panther Open in the UNI-Dome. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. with field events followed by a noon start for events on the track.
