No. 25 Pirates Top The Panthers, 57-49

CANCUN, Mexico – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team took on undefeated Seton Hall in the Cancun Challenge tonight, falling to the Pirates, 57-49.
Junior Madison Weekly led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points, adding seven boards, two assists and two steals. Stephanie Davison chipped in seven points and four rebounds while Jen Keitel added five points, a team-high eight rebounds and a block. Weekly averaged 15.0 points, 32.5 minutes and 6.5 rebounds per game during the Cancun Challenge, earning All-Tournament Team honors.
The Panthers kept the Pirates scoreless over five minutes of the first quarter, with Seton Hall shooting 0-for-5 from the field with two turnovers and no offensive rebounds at the 4:43 mark. UNI jumped out to a 5-0 lead during the Seton Hall scoring drought that included a three-pointer from Sharnae Lamar.
Despite Lamar's three, both teams struggled from the arc in the first quarter, shooting a combined 2-for-13 from the three-point line. The Panthers went on a scoring drought of their own, allowing Seton Hall to cut into their lead, but Davison drove for a layup with three seconds left in the quarter to send UNI into the second up 9-6.
Seton Hall took a one-point lead when Shakena Richardson hit a jump shot at the 8:26 mark in the second quarter, but Ellie Herzberg answered by knocking down a three-pointer, giving UNI a 12-10 advantage. Amber Sorenson made it a four-point lead for the Panthers with 7:02 on the clock with a reverse layup, but Seton Hall stayed close, answering with a bucket on the other end to make it 14-12.
The Panthers jumped out to an 18-12 lead when Herzberg found Weekly open for a three-pointer with 4:41 left to play in the first half, but Seton Hall was able to go on a 6-1 run to make it a two-point game at halftime. UNI headed into the third quarter leading 20-18.
Keitel put the Panthers back up by four to start the third quarter with her signature turnaround jumper, making it 24-20 with 7:18 on the clock. Seton Hall continued to press though, tying the score 30-30 with 2:38 left in the quarter when Aleesha Powell converted two free throws.
The Pirates turned it into a 7-0 run to take a 35-30 lead before Keitel hit a bucket in the paint with 1:02 left in the quarter, making it a three-point game. Powell was then able to punch in one more jumper before the buzzer, putting Seton Hall up 37-32 heading into the final quarter of the game.
Seton Hall extended its lead to nine with 7:10 remaining in the game, scoring four unanswered points to start the fourth quarter. The Panthers made it a six-point game with free throws from Keitel and Weekly heading into the six minute mark, but Seton Hall put five back on the board, making it 46-37 with 5:10 remaining.
After the Pirates moved to an 11-point lead with less than four minutes to play, Davison scored four straight points for the Panthers with Weekly adding a three-pointer with 30 seconds left, making it a six-point game. Seton Hall stayed composed at the line though, hitting clutch free throws in the remaining seconds to clinch their 57-49 victory.
UNI will return to action when they host the Iowa State Cyclones in the McLeod Center on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The game is set to tip-off at 7 p.m. CT.
