Panthers Rally, But Fall To Cyclones 84-75

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team rallied in the second half against Iowa State Wednesday night, but fell to the Cyclones, 84-75. UNI is 3-3 overall this season.
Madison Weekly led UNI with 26 points and a career-high eight rebounds while adding five assists, one block and two steals. Ellie Herzberg and Jen Keitel chipped in 12 points each with Amber Sorenson throwing in 11 to round out UNI's double-digit scorers.
The Panthers struggled from the field early, scoring their first points of the game at the 6:21 mark of the first quarter when Weekly knocked down a mid-range jumper to make it 8-2. The Panthers made it a four-point game with 5:41 left in the quarter, but Iowa State went on a 7-0 run and kept the pressure up to round out the quarter, heading into the second up 19-6.
UNI gained some rhythm in the second period, forcing the Cyclones to go scoreless for 2:45, cutting the lead to 25-17 with 4:31 left in the quarter after Keitel scored in the paint. UNI continued to chip away at the Iowa State lead, making it a seven point-game just minutes later and ending the half on a 7-0 run that included a three-pointer from Weekly with 13 seconds on the clock to make it 36-31 at the end of the second quarter.
The Panthers were able to cut it to a three-point game in the third quarter when Weekly grabbed a steal on the defensive end of the court, dished it to Angie Davison, who found Hannah Schonhardt under the basket to make it 46-43 with 5:28 on the clock. UNI pressed further on the Cyclones, tying the game 49-49 with 3:30 remaining in the quarter when Davison hit a layup and converted her free throw.
UNI took its only lead of the game with 2:40 left in the third quarter after Sorenson knocked down a huge three-pointer on the outside to make it 52-49. Unfortunately, Iowa State had an answer, scoring nine unanswered points to take a 58-52 lead heading into the final quarter.
Weekly quickly cut the Iowa State lead back down to 58-55 to start the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, but Iowa State pressed on, taking a 61-55 advantage with a trey from Seanna Johnson just seconds later. The Cyclones were then able to jump out to their largest lead of the quarter with 2:39 left in the game when a jumper from Bryanna Fernstrom dropped in making it 76-64.
The Panthers continued to battle, making it a five-point game from a Herzberg layup with 49 seconds left, but clutch free throws down the stretch from the Cyclones secured their 84-75 victory.
UNI will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 5 when they travel to the University of North Dakota. The game is set to tip off at 2 p.m.
