WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team attempted a season-high 28 shots on Sunday afternoon, playing to a 0-0 double overtime draw with Indiana State at home. The Panthers (5-7-4, 1-2-1 MVC) recorded their seventh shutout of the year, tying the UNI program record for most shutouts in a season set by the 2011 squad.
"We pride ourselves on our defensive foundation and it has served us well this season," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "Our team defending starts from the front and goes through the team. We are tough to break down and I'm pleased for this group that they have broken the record. We intend to add to that record before the end of the season."
UNI goalkeeper Whitney Blunt tallied her sixth shutout of the season, breaking the UNI record for most shutouts in a season set by Anne Marie Witko in 2003. Blunt finished with four saves to bring her season total to 70.
UNI played stout defense throughout the first half, holding the Sycamores to just three shot attempts in the first 45 minutes. The Panthers kept getting shots off in the second half despite heading into a stiff breeze, getting off 12 shots in the half.
"The amount of shots were there, the quality of the shots weren't," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "I think the goalkeeper made two, maybe three good saves out of 28 shots. The quality has got to get better."
In the overtime periods, the Panthers turned up the pressure on the Sycamores as they took seven shots over the 20 minutes span. Sycamore goalkeeper Brittany San Roman came up with three saves in the overtime periods, finishing with nine total saves.
Annie Dale led UNI with eight shots while putting three on target. Sarah Brandt finished with six shots from the midfield
"We got through today without losing, which is a good thing but we also dropped two points at home," said Price. "We've got two conferences games left, away at Drake and Loyola, both difficult places to play. We need to try to get something from both games."
UNI will resume Missouri Valley Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake. Kickoff between the Panthers and Bulldogs is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
